Wow. I am either becoming a more mature reader, or my ability to pick them (and the friends whose advise I take on what to read) has much improved. This is such a sweet story (although rife with tragedy). You just know, in the end it has to work out. I must admire Ms. Gruen for her ability to write men. (I find it akin to Chris Cleave and Little Bee). I found myself consistently forgetting that this novel was written by a woman. Few can do so with equal skill. This also proves what fabulous work can come from a small bit of passion and a good deal of research. In the afterword, Ms. Gruen admits that she had another book project going until she read a Chicago Tribune article about circuses. If this book doesn't have you cheering for the beleaguered and the underdog, you may need to re-locate your soul.

Depois do encantador "Desculpa mas vou chamar-te amor" eis que surge a continuação desta história de amor entre Alex e Nikki. Dado o sucesso do primeiro livro, as minhas expectativas para a continuação eram mais que muitas e, tal como previa, Federico Moccia não me desiludiu. "Desculpa mas quero casar contigo" revela-se um turbilhão de sentimentos e emoções. O pedido de casamento por exemplo, leva qualquer leitor a imaginar-se na pele de Nikki, uma sortuda! E mesmo a pessoa mais céptica em relação ao amor, fica enternecido com tal gesto! No entanto, este livro aborda também o lado menos positivo do amor e até da amizade... que por vezes enfrenta provações, nos levam a questionar se é mesmo isto que queremos e até coloca o amor em questão... Romântico, comovente, esplêndido, são alguns dos adjectivos com os quais posso descrever este livro, e no entanto, tornam-se poucos para conseguir demonstrar o que realmente senti ao lê-lo. Será finalmente relevado o que acontecerá a Alex e Nikki, às suas amigas Ondas que entraram para a faculdade ou no mundo do trabalho, e até mesmo dos amigos de Alex, que vêm as suas vidas darem uma grande reviravolta. A entrada de novas personagens que irão afectar principalmente Nikki e Alex, confesso que não gostei nada, mas isto deve-se ao meu lado romântico que queria apenas ver a felicidade das personagens principais. Acho imensa graça à facilidade com que o autor faz alusões a filmes e músicas, revelando assim outros dos seus gostos além da escrita. Apesar de o livro ter quase 600 páginas, a sua leitura flui com imensa facilidade, na minha opinião, demais até pois chega a uma altura em que o fim é inevitável e ficamos tristes por isso. Tudo isto para dizer que tanto o primeiro como o segundo livro me arrebataram o coração, serão livros que dificilmente me irei esquecer e estão já na minha lista de favoritos.

I read Control Point as a Beta reader, and I've known Myke for many years. His debut novel is action-packed and creates a very realistic part of the military that would hunt and deal with super-powered threats. An intense page-turner that left me waiting for the next part in the series.

Friedebert Tuglas is little known in the English-speaking world, but in his native Estonia he is held in the same high regard that is granted to Maupassant and Chekhov the world over. In fact, in the early part of the twentieth century Tuglas perfected a form of the short story which is sometimes described as Gothic Symbolist. It is a form of writing that demands of its practitioner an extraordinary eye for imagistic detail and precision in the choice of words. Imagine a writer who describes situations in the way one would create an expressionist painting, with striking details and a sense of colour. Imagine also characters that are deeply symbolic of our human condition. Think of a writer who borrows from surrealism, expressionism, symbolism and fantastic literature, but never quite falls into any of these categories; a writer who has little use for plot but who endows his stories with a deep structure resembling a musical composition. Finally, imagine a writer who set himself an impossible goal: to create myths that would typically require a collective effort of many generations of storytellers. If you can imagine all these characteristics coming together in one writer, than you have a good impression of what to expect from Tuglas’ strange stories. Among the outstanding stories in this collection of ten, we find: “Freedom and Death”, a narrative about a starving prisoner who either dreams of escape or truly attempts to run away (we are never sure); “The Golden Hoop”, about a mediocre, provincial apothecary who attempts to revisit his childhood, unaware that his body has already decomposed in a peat bog; “Cannibals”, about a group of children who awaken to sexuality and death; “The Mermaid”, a cruel fairy tale of enslavement and revenge; and “The Air is Full of Passion”, a horror tale about a cynical cavalryman who arrives at a bewitched house inhabited by gruesome flying heads. Even though Tuglas is a true master of the short story, I have given the book four stars because of some unfortunate choices made by the publishers. The inclusion of a partly biographical piece, of an aphoristic essay, and of a philosophical tract – these three choices seemed out of a place in a collection of short stories. If the publishers had chosen instead to include such masterpieces as “Popi and Huhuu”, “Riders in the Sky”, and “The Shadow of a Man”, or even the symbolic “At the End of the World”, then the volume would have been a must-buy. Even so, if you are interested in short stories and would like to explore an unusual development of this literary form, then I highly recommend the strange stories of Friedebert Tuglas.

Beautifully illustrated nice story on a topic you need picture books about. For some reason the current 3rd-4th graders were obsessed with the Titanic in K and 1. I think they may still be, at least a few of the 3rd grader teachers seem to say so.
