I think this is the problem I have with all business/self-help books: I feel like they dumb them down a bit too much for my liking. The whole Joy-finds-the-meaning-of-life-on-a-bus-thing was a little too cheesy for me. Though I did take out quite a few bits of positive info, I just wasn't that impressed. I still want to read a couple more of his books though. I'm hoping that maybe this book just wasn't one of my favorites and the others are a lot better!

Entertaining, if occasionally a little ridiculous, which I suppose is Terrance Dicks at his best. The Seventh Doctor and Ace aren't my favorite Doctor/companion pair but they are somehow extremely well suited to a story set in 1920's Chicago. I liked the original POV character. The secondary story involving Romana and Benny I could have done without - it was predictable and not particularly interesting. Benny as a POV was irritating and occasionally did stupid things for no reason because the plot required it. Fun, but I would've liked it even better as a lighter story about Seven & Ace getting mixed up with Chicago gangsters, without all the "State of Decay" references.

For what it is, it's great. I read it before another one of my ill-fated attempts to get through Ulysses. I ended up going out and buying Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist, too, both of which I finished. Alas, Ulysses still sits in storage along with this introduction, which has great illustrations and a lot of carefully-researched biographical detail about Joyce himself that you won't necessarily run into in another book that you're ever likely to read.

I am a believer in the Mothman. The '60s were a trying time for Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and John A. Keel's book is filled with many stories that clarify things left untouched in the 2001 movie. In this book, he shares his personal experiences in Point Pleasant and at other times in his UFOlogy career. The way he searches for the Mothman is quite amusing, and a tad bit ridiculous. Also, he seems to connect too many incidents to the huge theories of extraterrestrial visitors, including the story of Indrid Cold, which occurred in Mineral Wells (contrary to what the movie makes it all out to be). Despite all of these confusing issues, the book is worth the time for any person who is fascinated by the supernatural. Thanks to Keel, the mystery has grown bigger nearly half a century after the events that seized Point Pleasant and the state of West Virginia. Read it before watching the movie, however.

** spoiler alert ** I found it really hard to rate this book. Intellectually, it is a well-written book with a very good "voice" of a 5 year old. I just couldn't get over the horror from page 1 to the end of the book. The thought of the space constraints, the disgusting kidnapper, the days of inventing a life. It was sick, I had to skip various pages for feeling literally sick to my stomach. Honestly I wish I had never read it and I will never recommend it. Especially for mothers. Especially for women. I ended up rating it a three for the writing level, but truly I don't think you can rate a book like this for others--to me, it is like the Lovely Bones which was horrifying to any mother of girls especially.

I am listening to this book on CD. Sidney Poitier's voice is so soothing. I am on 3rd CD (total of 7 CDs) and I like it so far.
A collection of short horror stories from such aurthors as H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King.
tight, set piece. a one sitting story well worth the time. Third book from Black that I've read....Christine Falls and the Silver Swan are richer broader tales but this one has an E.A. Poe cast and well cast it is, indeed.

This is my favorite book of poems to come out in 2007 as of yet though it seems it might stay that way. The references to Romance poets are equal parts fun and thoughtful. I also am pretty fond of the graphic design in the first few pages. Weee and such to that. "The Darkness Needs A Little Shove" might win out as my favorite section of the book though, a series of small bits curving all over the place. I'm really not sure what to say right now. I probably shouldn't be trying to review something while I'm so exhausted. I'll have to edit this later. In summation, read this book. Best book of poems in '07.
Had to move on. I kept putting it down and picking it up again because it won the Printz this year, and the reviewers said it comes together really well. I love complex stories, generally, and want to see how Hannah's story comes together with Taylors. I love the Australian authors, and I loved Marchetta's Saving Francesca. So, this has a lot going for it, but I think I'm just not in the mood right now. Recommended for high school.
