Clearly his earlier work. His maturing skill bleeds through in places; the latter half is the stronger part, with moments of clarity here and there in the earlier, unconnected, stories.

I did not like this book. At all. Not one bit. I cannot find one minute piece of redeeming value in it. The sad thing is that I expected to enjoy it; as one of the book review blogs I read listed it as one of their favorite books they will probably read all year. First of all, the narrator(s) of the book are a group of men, who grew up together and had one of their classmates disappear while they were in high school. And then they were obsessed with her the rest of their life (or at least for the rest of the book). So early on in the book there is all this sexual, horny high school boy stuff. And the whole book is just dark. And depressing. And for the whole book they are just guessing what they think happened to her. But they don't actually know. And they **SPOILER ALERT** never actually find out! So the whole book felt like a waste. Plus the book was not written chronologically, so it was jumping all over the place and I was so confused. It would always be saying "but this is 5 years before such and such" and "10 years after such and such" sometimes referencing things they hadn't fully explained. ARG. Anyway, hated this book. Least favorite book ever. I only read the whole thing because it was only 240 pages and I probably invested less than 4 hours of my life into it. Worth it to be able to write negative review. DO NOT READ THIS.

I love Myers Briggs and think that test is so accurate, so I decided to purchase a book on the subject! This book has all the temperaments and explains in detail through each one... good stuff!

It took me two weeks to finish this novel, which is usually a sign that I don't care for a book, but that wasn't the case with this novel. I stayed interested in this classic saga from the first page to the last. My favorite character was the heroine, Meggie. I couldn't personally identify with her struggles or her lifelong romantic tragedy, but I admired her strength and perseverance through all she had to endure. I know that there is a mini-series based on this book, and I may buy it just to watch it on screen. However, I had the characters pictured in my mind totally different than the actors and actresses who portrayed them in the mini-series. I had Ralph de Bricassart imagined as Aidan Quinn, probably because of his recent role as a priest. Plus, Ralph was supposed to be dashingly handsome, and Richard Chamberlain just does nothing for me. Anyway, I'd recommend reading this novel, if you haven't already. It takes you away to New Zealand, then Australia, and then to Europe later in the book. There's a reason why this one is a classic. Just remember to not get too attached to the characters!

When my brain turns to mush I read this and everything makes sense again.
Very powerful book in my opinion. It's about this boy who gets hauled off to a concentration camp. See what struggles this brings for him when you read it. I would highly recommend it for people of any age as long as they can read. They will definitely enjoy it.

This book is very hard for me to review because I believe there are two parts to it. One part is a story of how a father comes to terms with losing a daughter and the other part about religion. The father coming to terms with losing a daugher was good although I didn't think was written very well. The religion part was just plan weird to me at times. I almost gave up on it, but ended up scanning most of it. However, I can see why this book would be touching to some people.
kinda disturbing..but good.

Don't take my word for it: Bob Dylan; Jim Morrison; Janis Joplin; David Bowie; Hunter Thompson and Ken Kesey (to name just a few) have all proclaimed Kerouac's novel a life-altering read. Check it out.
