I'm sure to be shot for saying this, but Brecht was Boring. Capital B. He only gets three stars because he's Brecht.

Author Brett J. Talley has breathed new life into legends and stories as old as the Cthulhu creature itself. More importantly, he has captured the voice of the legendary writers who go before him. Told in the classic literary horror style of Lovecraft, Shelley, and Stoker, this book is alive with imagery and rich characters which bring to life the terrifying story in a way that will keep you up at night long after you have turned the last page. Told through the eyes of five main characters, the book strings together four stories that each could stand alone as masterful shorts, with a fifth that ties them together and moves them towards a terrifying ending. Carter Weston is a student from the legendary Miskatonic University, with a smiling nod to Lovecraft for the reference, and is charged with the task of recovering an ancient book of incredible value and, it turns out, untold power to awaken an evil that could destroy the world. On his quest he meets four men, each of whom share with him their own personal tales of horror which bring to life classic creatures like the wendigo, witches, the Kraken, and the terror of an insane asylum. In the tales of terror from the dark woods of New England to the mountains of Eastern Europe to the blue water oceans onboard great sailing ships from long ago, young Carter finds a thread that moves him on his quest towards its inevitable, spine chilling conclusion. In setting, characters, and tone Mr. Talley has done far more than mimic the classic masters of the genre—he has embodied them completely. This is an absolute must read for all lovers of the genre and any lover of well told stories. If you like adventure stories mixed with mystery and ancient legends of horror—you have found your perfect read in That Which Should Not Be. Brett J. Talley has made a dramatic entrance onto the fiction writing stage with this, his first book. I have no doubt his name will be well known and I look forward to his next works.
It's even better the second time.

Eye-opening (and for some, perhaps even mind-blowing) look at the indigenous cultures of the Americas prior to the European conquest and colonization. Despite the title, the author focuses to a large extent on telling new, more correct (based upon available research) versions of post-contact history you probably learned in school, like the Spanish conquests of the Aztecs and Incas, and the story of the colonization of New England. There is a lot of material to cover, and the author goes off on (relevant) tangents a few times, such as discussions of maize and the play-by-play of various historical scientific debates. There's also a lot of material that will be brand new for many people--for example, Cahokia and the other Native American cities that once flourished near modern-day St. Louis and elsewhere in the central and southern United States. Not the smoothest read, but definitely worth it for the educational value.
My move was an organized one b/c of this book. I go back to it every now and again for help/tips on various things. Good for the cluttered. :) (That's me.)

How can I possibly give the same number of stars to Crime and Punishment and Pure Drivel? I admit, I have no idea. But I love Pure Drivel. It's absolutely hilarious. "Side Effects" is one of my favorite chapters. "How I joined Mensa" is another winner. It's intelligent, super goofy humor that pokes fun at our ridiculous society.
** spoiler alert ** cliche. i always feel that hallucinations are a bit of a cop out; an easy well to wrap up a story. althought i did like the story told from a child's perspective, i must say, it was still a bit boring. the ending should've been in the middle and then worked from there. after the climax, all that was left was NOTHING, a big BLAH. on a side note, why the heck did carrie smear feces on the bathroom wall when she was younger, before her daddy's died? was that suppose to be relevant?
Glad to see familiar characters, I think it bridged into a new series easily. Not as much action as her Vamp Academy books, but they are good.
