** spoiler alert ** Three stars might be generous, but maybe not. To its credit, this book was very readable and engaging. I tore through it, so I should really only be allowed to complain so much. I suppose my biggest beef with this novel is that I thought it had so much promise and then it ended up not being what I wanted it to be. At all. First, I was disappointed that Katherine turned out to be so low-rent. I expected and wanted her to have a darker and more exciting past than her letter to Truitt indicated, but common prostitution is not so much interesting as it is distasteful. This, along with so much else in the book, seemed just a bit gratuitously trashy. Right along with that was Truitt's rather overwrought Freudian hang-ups. It was sort of interesting in the beginning, but I stopped being convinced after a while. Also the martyr routine began to irritate and bore me very shortly after it started, and didn't seem in keeping with his character. I never believed that he loved her, or that she loved him. I believed there was some sick codependency, but not any real affection. And Antonio. Pretty much everything about Antonio struck a false note with me. Katherine was supposed to have been enraptured by him, but I never saw his charm. He didn't even seem like he knew how to charm, or to do anything but be bitter and petulant and hateful. Maybe it was just about his looks, but I find that that doesn't usually translate well in books; it's too hard to remember someone is supposed to be gorgeous when they are so horrible unless you can actually see them. He's probably a better fit for movies. It's not the author's fault, but the audiobook reader didn't do the story many favors either. He delivered much of the dialogue in either a flat, cold snarl or simpered; the narration was given with what seemed like complete disinterest in the story. I was not a fan. Ok, so believe it or not, I did like this book enough to recommend it to people. It was fun and it flew by. I like books set in the cold Midwest, and the writing was enjoyable. Not perfect, but worth reading if you are so inclined.

I started this book months ago during my "local / slow eating" kick. The first two-thirds, about processed food and organic food, were fascinating: Pollan's writing was rich, but tight. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about corn, and considered giving away all my worldly possessions and apprenticing myself to a grass farmer in Virginia. The last third was about the most personal form of eating: a hunter-gatherer meal. I started it several times and then basically gave up. I just didn't get the point of the exercise. How many people are really in a position to be able to forage and hunt their food on a regular basis, and how many of those people would have time to read a book like this? It seemed like a ridiculously self-absorbed quest. After giving my Creative Writing class an excerpt from this book to analyze, however, I realized it was a bit hypocritical of me to expect them to read something I had never finished. I buckled down and promised to wade through what I thought would probably be the most boring part of the book. Well, after a couple of dry-ish pages, things got a lot more interesting. He began to question some of the foundational principles of modern society, including the practice of eating meat. Ultimately, he decides that vegetarianism is not the only way out of our current situation, but the struggle is wonderful to observe. Additionally, his stories about hunting and gathering wild mushrooms comprise some of the best writing in the whole book. Moral: force yourself to read the whole thing. You won't be disappointed!

This book has a recommended read our highest award The forum excavations in Rome go on, directed by Lord Bastian Satyr. Out of nowhere a mysterious haunting voice calls to him. He cannot see this person but the voice is decidedly female. She lures him to the site of a long vanished temple, where the Vestal Virgins once performed rites of erotic surrender. The archaeological find will make his career but his heart is telling him something is wrong. Silvia is a pure Ephemeral; she can enter the bodies of others and become any woman a man may wish to have. His choice is her pleasure. But the only man she wants to command her is Bastian. The six book in The Lords of Satyr series is Bastian by Elizabeth Amber. I found even though I had not read the others in this series that this book was easy to follow and a pleasure to read. Bastian is a strong alpha male with a sex drive that just will not quit. When we first meet Silvia we find her being a voyeur to her best friend and Bastian. Bastian is doing what he loves to do best - loving a good woman long and hard. That scene made me want to read more, and I am so glad I did with the mystery intrigue and romance thrown in Bastian makes me want to go and read all the previous in this series. The mythological ties and romance make this book one I will not forget. Ms. Amber is a master story teller that really brings her characters and stories to life in a memorable way.
