I hated this book while reading it. I was loathe to finish it, though as I did I giggled as reflective absurdity. Sadly, my friends seeking tenure now are experiencing similar dramas. Oy.

This was the first book I had ever come across that I could read and re-read and still enjoy as much as I had the first time around. My favorite read. I have a lot of books that I would put on a list somewhere, but I think it's safe to say that this will consistently be in the #1 spot.

Why do I like some Karen Armstrong books a lot before I read them, but less after? This is one of those.... sorry, it's full of good stuff, but the style of delivery here is a wee bit preachy somehow, and a little too erudite for me-- hard to follow some of the Greek mythological and poetic allusions.

I picked this book up at a school bookfair because the cover just looked so intriguing. Sadly, I couldn't really get into this book. It just didn't grab my attention.

boring, leads to nothing, but might be entertaining if, (as i said for his other book i reviewed) you can read very fast. i have been disappointed by the endings of his books.

I read this book a couple of years ago and it's stayed in my memory – a rare occurrence. I especially liked - the poetic simplicity of the writing - the fact that the main character is an old woman (quite a rare thing for novels?) - the way it develops compassion in the old woman, and in my understanding of her - the baddies don't have it all their own way I don't particularly like the old-style typeface in this paperback. The book also deserves nice paper, more white space on the page, some haunting photographs!
