I should have read this AFTER we planned a trip to the Carribean. I'm packing mosquito repellant for sure now. This book was very well written and didn't bog you down with difficult scientific details. It read well and was interesting.

Sorry, not my thing, too much about pregnancy and childbirth and circumcision.
This book was so enticing -- a great title, a super author photo on the rear cover, and a sassy introduction. Several chapters made me think of David Sedaris' wit and self-deprecating humor. I was even drawn in by a direct reference to my x-sister-in-law's-sister (confusing...). None of this, however, was strong enough to make me really excited about reading 200+ pages of why some 40-something man never got his shit together.
I am going to write a placeholder review for all of Robert Sampson's books because I plan to reread them soon. Hands down, the best writer/historian the pulps ever had! Why? Because he loves the pulps but he's not "in love" with them - he can show you why they were great, why they were awful, why they were brilliant, why they were cheap, how they were poetic and how they were trash, and do it all while informing you AND placing the whole shebang in it's cultural context AND entertaining you. An amazing writer, I believe I need one more book by him to have everything he ever wrote on the subject (that's been printed in book form, at least) - you may not ever need to actually read many pulp stories and now you don't have to - Robert Sampson has and can condense their weird wonder down into this strange, printed form of a magic elixir (a mixed metaphor!?! why, that would have made me 2/3rds of a cent if I was a bang-em out, hack pulp writer!) Seriously, these are some stunning books and well worth your time if you have any interest in the topic of the pulps and dime novels and genre history.
This book is a brain cells killer. I will not recommend it to anyone of my acquaintance. I didn’t like any of the characters in this book. And my only feelings toward the main heroine were pity and irritation. I often caught myself on a thought, that she is a slutty, stupid and immature. I didn’t like the style either. The language was poor and the author uses the rule of three far too often. I mean a constant repeating of the same things and phrases in hopes that the “stupid” reader will understand all the seriousness of the situation. I managed to read this book until the end only because a friend asked my opinion on it. And even a good looking cover doesn’t make this book “OK”. Usually I don’t make a review of books I didn’t like, because everyone’s tastes are different. I just wanted to alert you about this book, because the high rating on it is inadequate and you will be better off without it polluting your mind.

Oh Norma, when you derail from the plan it's tedious to read your work. I need at least one awkward sex scene per 34 pages.

I had never heard of this book until I saw it on good reads. I was really looking forward to reading it because the reviews were so good. I was disappointed. The book was good, but not great.
I was reading this on the subway in NYC when a guy who looked about my age came up to me and said, "I read that when I was your age." I asked him how old he was now. He said, "Twenty-five." I said, "Me too." Hmmm. I don't remember much of the book but I remember enoying most of the journey, if not all of it. But maybe I was too old for it.
Short but sweet.
