I just reread this one with my boys and then skimmed the rest of the series. Enough adventure to keep my kids excited and enough character development for me. I'm not against religion by any means but these books had a bit too much (written by a minister's wife). Maybe it's just the fact that they look to the Heart. If you want your characters to believe in God, great but just say God and don't try to cover it up with new terms that just make it feel a bit odd.

This is exactly what I was promised, like, a decade ago when I first heard about it: A completely ridiculous but oddly compelling rereading of the Bible through the lens of bodybuilding magazines. Needless to say, probably, I disagree with much of what's here, but in the best way, where I need to be extremely clear about why.

I'm actually reading the next edition of this book but it's not listed in GoodReads.
This was not nearly as good as her Glass Castle book but it was an interesting read.
Charming book with wonderful characters.

A fun and easy, summer read. The book rarely resembles the movie and has much stronger and more realistically human characters.

The premise of the book stems from a school shooting in which ten students are killed and nineteen students are gravely injured. But more importantly, Jodi talks about things that seem to be silly and adolescent (it being something primarily taking place within the minds and lives of high schoolers), or something that we will one day "grow out of." Not only is bullying addressed in bulk, but there is also a good amount of dialogue and plot that calls into question things like conformity, fitting in, and judgment, all things frequently written about and commented on, but rarely ever changed for good. I'm not quite sure why I wrote a description of this book, as I typically don't do that in my reviews. But there was something about this book that, at first, kind of repulsed me, but eventually drew me in. From the onset, I noticed things like how Jodi seems to rely on romantic relationships to "complete" a person a bit too much in her novels, and they're also the more predictable relationships (though I suppose life is like that often enough). I was also a bit annoyed at many of the characters, being high schoolers, thinking that their lives were the worst things in the world when really they were spoiled brats that didn't see how lucky they were to have all that they did (though the protagonist's life really is something tragic, and it makes me wonder how many people live the whole of their lives like that...) In the end though, I realized that, though these things may be petty compared to the oppression and exploitation that exists in so many other areas in other countries, the root of it all is still the same: insecurity and selfishness. So in that, Jodi was able to draw me back in by bringing many of the characters to life so that, though many of them were still just as emotionally inept and annoying as they were in the beginning, they still became understandable.
This fictional account of Ernest Hemingway's first marriage to Hadley Richardson made me want to re-read The Sun Also Rises, as well as read A Moveable Feast, Hemingway's memoir of their time together in Paris. I found the book a bit bland and was never able to get a clear sense of what made Hadley tick or what exactly fueled her relationship with Hemingway.

Even though this was not an exciting read and it took me the whole month to finish it (minus the week I took off to read another book), I am very glad I read it. I learned so much from this book and I can honestly say it has changed my life in some ways. As I was reading it, I would tell Jeff different things that I had just read and he has learned a lot too! We are both embracing the idea of buying locally as much as possible, buying organic, and growing our own little garden. I've already got 2 heirloom tomatoes planted, amongst other things. But back to the book review, I enjoyed Camille's sections a lot. They were short and to the point and she is a good writer. My favorite family member had to be Lily though. I loved her rainbow carton of eggs. I definitely think this book could have been much shorter without leaving anything important out. Overall, for a book on this subject, it was very good.
