This is one of those books whose effect and remembered enjoyment has stayed with me, even though I read it over 15 years ago. I mainly remember being really really annoyed that the main narrator of the book married the useless sister when the awesome, strong, capable sister with personality to spare was overlooked AND THEN husband and sister-in-law teamed up to protect the wilting-flower-come useless-for-anything wife from life. I loved Collins technique of using written testimonies of the various eye witnesses and hence their different memories and points of view and particularly recall the idiosyncrasies of the Italian guy (whose role in the story escapes me).

I liked the author's writing style. And this book has such a beautiful story. But I couldn't give it more than three stars because I have a hard time with sad endings. I mean, I know that the ending is good for Amanda and even Adrienne has found happiness somehow, which is what the moral of the story is; finding happiness through our trials. But really, why can't books end the way that I want them to end and still get the moral across. I guess life isn't like that. But I would have given it more stars if it wasn't so hard for me to read the last couple of chapters. Too sad!

The Poole twins have just inherited a flat in London adjacent to Highgate cemetery from their deceased aunt Elspeth, whose presence still looms heavily. As the girls navigate their new surroundings and aunt’s legacy they discover Elspeth left more than her living space. Part love story, part ghost story- Niffenegger weaves a haunting modern gothic tale. --Lisanne E.--

Incredibly beautiful, incredibly sad. No easy answers and nothing tied up neatly at the end, this book is masterful. I've heard many call it overrated...I'm not sure what that means.

Pretty funny but it kinda stinks that they waste all the magic on the wrong kid until the very end.

Okay, so if this book was Sidney Sheldon at the top of his game, I'm definitely not reading any of his other books because I really didn't like this book. First of all, it was way to predictable. Even for me, who doesn't read a lot of mystery novels. So if you're one who loves mysteries and reads them day in and day out, save yourself the trouble and don't read this one, because a few chapters into the book, it's no longer a mystery. Another thing that annoyed me about this book was our two protagonists. Of course they're both very young and very beautiful, but on top of that they're incredibly smart and lucky. I mean, everything seems to actually go right for them when it's supposed to be going wrong. They manage to have a steady flow of cash on them, they can get a plane, helicopter, taxi, whatever, whenever they need it. And they're very one demensional too. I really don't even want to continue talking about the book because I disliked reading it so much. In summary, I didn't like the book because of the predictable plot and the shallow, one-demensional characters who really aren't real women at all but just some author's fantasy of what a perfect woman should be.

The last 250 pages has a very good story that I could almost get invested in. Almost, because Byatt would throw in some speech on something vaguely related and I'd have to figure out what connection she was trying to make. The first 300 pages were wayyyyyy too long. Mostly from the poetry, I think because I can usually handle long characterizations. Very ambivalent. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Probably wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends or re-read it. It does kind of make me want to watch the movie though...

I liked a lot of the advicd Dr. Laura had to offer but I felt she was a little unfair to women in general. That being said, it IS Dr. Laura so I suppose I shouldn't have expected anything else.
