Jerome Goopman explores the topic of How Doctors Think in an engaging and interesting way. Filled with anecdotes from all parts of medicine and from both patient and doctor perspectives, this book explores a variety of topics. The book has a large scope with only brief glances into each aspect he is exploring. His book definitely stresses the importance of thinking in medicine (not just the use of algorithms) and how that thinking can go astray. He also explores how patients can help their doctors by asking the right questions. I enjoyed the application of this book to medical education (medical students should be taught how their own thinking can interfere with medicine)and the economy of medicine (little time with patients and the influence of drug reps) but would have enjoyed a little information on how these things can be changed in our current system. Overall a very enjoyable and interesting read.

If you want to read great criticism, this is the go-to woman. She wrote for the New Yorker for years and years. Kael's film reviews are laugh-out-loud funny. It may not be in this book, but I loved her review of The Sound of Music--which she hated. She called Andrews "sexless" with her boyish hair and unflappable optimism. I actually like the movie, but I cracked up all over the place in the library when I read her review. She rocks.

I'm not through the book yet, but one reason I love Sparks is for his enduring writing style - a style that keeps the pages turning, and keeps the imagination whirling about how the characters will feel at the end of their predicament.

Picked up this book hoping to escape the political debacle happening in RL...got sucked into the politics of the Potter world instead. Much more enjoyable though!
This was an easy read and one of those "good women's stories" that will get you through a week-end!

So not literature, but a good distraction from some crappy stuff happening with my husband (hopefully nothing serious). This book was exactly what I needed to get lost in - it chronicles of the lives of several uber rich divorcees in a witty and fun way. Irresistible if you like this kind of stuff.
I loved this book! Audrey is a regular 16 year old until she breaks up with her boyfriend, Evan. Evan is the lead singer of the Do-Gooders, a high school band. After the break up Evan writes a song that shoots to the top of the charts (all the charts). 'Audrey, wait!' catapults Audrey into the spotlight; school mates want to be her friend, struggling bands want to be inspired by her, tv, magazines and newspapers want interviews. Audrey just wants to be a normal kid. This is the story of how that is not possible, and what happens next.
