These books are so bad yet I am unable to resist their pull. The writing about coffee is pretty hilarious and from my perspective the author doesn't really know a whole lot about knitting.

On the top of my shoulders sits a box made of bone. Within that box is a greyish organ with the texture of jelly, the size of a melon (canteloupe, not water) that controls pretty much everything that I do. Billions of microscopic connections allow me to generate thoughts, process input, communicate, control posture and interpret data with a speed that is not matched by the fastest and biggest computers we have yet invented. The brain is a phenomenon and should be a thing of constant marvel but we take it for granted as long as it does what we expect. Steven Pinker has written a fabulous, dense book to try and generate a level of knowledge about the Mind that increases the sense of wonder whilst explaining some of the processes involved.

It's hard to remember now what I really thought of the book since I just saw the movie yesterday. I did like it though and I think Kathryn Stockett did a nice job telling this story in a slightly different way. I felt the fear and anger and pure frustration of the characters. I'm not sure if we should feel good because it seems we've come so far or if we just want to feel that way. Some days I don't think we've come all that far, some days it feels like we still treat each other just as badly, we just call it different things.

Beautiful and haunting book, as I've come to expect from McCarthy. I'm looking forward to finishing out the Border Trilogy. The passage about the ex-priest recounting his meeting with the God-defier was a brilliant example of how good a writer McCarthy is.

The Outsiders, is sorta like the movie West Side Story, but instead of the jets and the sharks there are greasers and socs. The story is told in the point of view of the youngest greaser, Ponyboy. After ponyboy's parents died, he has to live with his brothers who are always making sure that he is taking care of himself so that they don't get separated. Through Gang wars, murder, running away, you see how the greasers handle life, and see how they come to realize that they are more than just friends in a gang but that they are actually a family. I really enjoyed this book. I had to read it in junior high and didn't quite understand it but now as i read it again it is wonderful! I really liked how you see the story through ponyboy's eyes because it is then like you are actually in the story. This book is full of a lot of emotions which is always keeping you on your toes! Warning: there is teen smoking and drinking and a few swear words towards the end of the novel.
