One of my all-time favorite books!! I love the story of the priest going to live among the Native Americans-his nonjudgemental spirit and unconditional embrace for their customs is a great inspiration to me. Love it!

I have very mixed feelings about The Corrections. On the one hand, there are many very brilliant set pieces--like Chip's trip to the supermarket and the cruise--some pretty plausible and occasionally interesting characters, and even some genuinely moving moments. On the other hand, I feel that Franzen has only a thinly veiled contempt for his characters--and especially Alfred and Enid. He fails what to me is a crucial test for any imaginative writer: finding empathy for people you might not otherwise like to spend an afternoon with. Moreover, the book suffers from problems of writing. The opening chapter is pompous and overwritten; and in fact, there are many sentences that have lots of horsepower but go nowhere in particular. It's as if Franzen was doing his best to temper his more "hysterical realist" impulses--embodied in many many long, winding, periodic sentences suffused with many layers of mixed metaphor--and only occasionally succeeded. All in all, I am not sure I get why this book is so loved by so many people. Maybe I'd need to have had a Midwestern family upbringing to understand.

I did enjoy this book. I do wish I had started reading the Night Huntress World books though. I'll have to go back and start those. There were a lot of spoilers in this book about what happened in those books. Not a huge deal to me, its about how they get to those points not where they end up.

I've read so many books on WWII and am always amazed by how many different perspectives there are. This was has a Hungarian perspective. The book is, of course, heart-wrenching and horrifying in spots. But to me, this book was mostly one about family and love. The protagonist is exceptionally likeable, and I found the story to be very heartwarming.

On the cover is a beatiful magnolia and the book is set in North Carolina which are two positives for me. Boy was I disappointed. The main character's grandmother says some memorable words on her death bed that leads the main character on a search for who she is. She has synaesthesia so she tastes words. I don't really know what this added to the story other than it made it hard to read. "Lindamint, youcannedgreenbeans may have forTriscuitgotten this, but youcannedgreenbeans had gone off to Yaleavocado." She did have a homosexual cross-dressing uncle who was a mortician. She dearly loved him and they spent many hours together. I would pass on reading this book.

More history of science than science.

liked it at the time... but don't remember anything profound. does that say a big something about the book... my brain... or something else? :) i wonder if books like that have a place anyway because they affect our lives for a moment and maybe help us to become more cemented in what we believe/are... even if we can't consciously remember how we were affected later. thoughts?

The final book in the trilogy, I'd recommend these books to anyone who likes fantasy.
I use this as part of my "Stinky Storytime" along with "Stinky, Stinky Feet" and "The Stinky Cheese Man". Wonderful for toddlers and preschoolers.
