This is not one of his best books. It drew you in because you wanted to know what happened to the characters to connect them, but I thought the end was anti-climatic. The actual story of the event that occurred to the characters was sort of boring; an interesting concept, but not told in an interesting way. Even the characters, who were interesting throughout most of the story, seemed to become less so during the main "action" part. He's had better.

great book, great.
Wow I definitly need to read this again, there is so much going on here. And the references are crazy, i wish i was up enough on pop culture/history/literature and more to get them all. of course it dosn't help that they are all false ; ) Marisha Pessl built a fascinating and intricate world for Blue Van Meer, the main character, that the reader can't help but be sucked in to.I can't wait for her next book to come out.. someday.
I am reading this one in Swedish so it is taking a bit longer than I was hoping for. It is a wonderful book.

Bishop Latour looks back on his life... the book is drenched in a clear, golden light, probably very similar to the light in New Mexico. Lawrence Weschler recently observed that there is a Willa Cather resurgence going on. It makes sense. Cather has a talent for arc--she compresses an incredible range of emotion, a whole short story, into a memory that takes up two paragraphs. There are also longer stories embedded within the narrative--a character will just pause to recount something, and that vignette will stay in your mind forever and if you're not careful, you'll forget where you read it and you might think it came from the most perfectly-crafted dream you ever had. Read My Antonia as well--the story of the wolves happened to me as I describe above. Cather's pacing is superb. I enjoyed the moments of reflection and pause in this book even more than the action.

By all rights, this should be right up my alley, there's some linguistic theory geekery and I do like a good dystopia, and I am known to be partial for weird structures, but there is something missing for me. It's a little clunky, some things are a little rushed, there are some instances of telling instead of showing, and then showing a couple of chapters later, and there's a little too much causal Christianity involved for my tastes. And then there is the persistent geek voice in me saying: "But no one in their right mind would ever set up a system with only one master and no redundancy or fail over". The last part is probably me being damaged from working in CS/IT. In all, it's a reasonably good tale, and worth reading, but I don't know if I'll hang on to my copy.
good book very entertaining

For those who are hoping for something scary, this is actually a sweet mild story about a frustraded ghost that cannot seem to haunt the family, that is living at his house, properly. The other tales were just boring especially the last one about a crying rocket that speaks (wtf Oscar? srly?)
