Quite enjoyed the story throughout the book though I found some things remained vague and unexplained; perhaps by design. I kind of wish they'd ended a chapter before they did. I found it an ending that felt dull and the scene unresolved. Perhaps it was and I just couldn't hear properly over the ever increasing music volume of the audiobook outro. Narrators were enjoyable to listen to and I want to find more books read by them.

Really good

If you like memoirs in the vein of "Running With Scissors" you'll probably like this one as well. It's a story of a woman's difficult, yet zany, childhood. Very entertaining as well as inspiring.
I loved this book. You don't have to be broke to read it, though that is the target audience. It is really practical advice and the format is really good.
I received an Advance Readers' Copy of this book through LibraryThing Early Reviewers. "Across Many Mountains" is a memoir of three generations of women from a family. Kunsang was born and raised in Tibet, prior to the Chinese invasion of Tibet. As an adult, she chose to be a Buddhist nun. With her family she flees across the Himalayas during the Chinese occoupation of Tibet. Her daughter, Sonam, is born in Tibet, becomes a refugee in India as a child, eventually moving to Switzerland where she raises a bicultural family. Her daugher, Yangzom, is born and raised in Switzerland, but feels ties to her Tibetan heritage. She is the author of the book. I enjoyed many facets of this book. It was fascinating to learn about traditional Tibetan culture, Tibetan Buddhism, and the lives of Tibetan refugees in India. I also respected that the author did not hide the flaws of her Buddhist faith, providing a non-sanitized, accurate portrayal of her religion. On the other hand, I do not think that the book is well-written. The author switches from first- to third- person point-of-view throughout the book, often within chapters and paragraphs, which is distracting to the reader. Many times the author also includes descriptions of events or details in one or two paragraphs that distract from the narrative. Finally, the book seems rushed--like the author was trying to include too much information in too short a space. Both Kunsang and Sonam are fascinating women but their stories seem to have been skimmed. Yanzom's story is by far the weakest, seeming unfocused.

Funny and poignant look into what it means to have OCD. Made me feel like less of a freak.
Pretty decent read, with Native Americans, wolves, murder and the typical romance novel sex scenes. You know, I feel kind of dumb saying this, but the cover art really bugged me. The main character is, of course, impossibly handsome and sexy, but the cover art makes him look like a steroid freak. Yeah, I know the picture needs to draw in the reader to make the sale, but the guy on the cover is rather laughable. Kind of a black-haired Fabio. Anyway, look past the cover and read the book, it's a fun romp.

I just re-read this book for the first time in years, and while it affects me in a much different way than it did when I was a teenager, damn, does it affect me. I see now that the writing, while beautiful, can be a little melodramatic, and that the central romance of the story is not really at all romantic--Harris is kind of a dick, and Ann is, in fact, a little cold, not to mention the fact that their brief affair is completely selfish. However, I also think that their flaws are the point. Ann Grant/Katz/Stackpole/Lord is, ultimately, an ordinary person, and what is truly haunting about this book is its treatment of what it means to realize life's ordinariness at the end. Ultimately, Ann's life has been a series of joys and sadnesses. Some of the sadnesses are terrible, most notably the loss of her son, but none of them are particularly unique. And I think that within this familiarity lies the book's true heartbreak--it is a narrative about the singular power of memory. Minot examines with compassion the significance we lend, perhaps arbitrarily, to what is finally nothing but a brief collection of incidents that survives only in the stories we choose to tell before we go.
One of the most heart-wrenching and uplifting love stories I've read in a long time. Just beautiful.
