This is the story of Connie Goodwin, a doctoral candidate in American History at Harvard, who (upon her mother’s request) spends the summer cleaning and clearing out her grandmother's house that has been vacant for 20 years in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Little did Connie know what she was in store for when she agreed to this tedious task. While browsing through her grandmother’s old books, Connie stumbles upon a very old key in a bible. Attached to this key is an equally old slip of paper with the name, Deliverance Dane. Told through flashbacks from Salem in the late 1690's we learn the story of Deliverance, a woman condemned as a witch in 1692, her daughter and eventually her granddaughter, as well as the history of the "Receipt Book" which is handed down from generation to generation. As Connie tries to get the house back to rights in order to sell it for lack of payment of taxes, she is also working on her doctorate course and is persuaded by her adviser to find Deliverance's physick book otherwise known as a Shadow Book which might be the perfect topic for her doctorate - having found an unknown Salem witch. I could not put this down! -- this is historical fiction at it's finest. It makes you want to know more about the time and immerses you wholly in it's world. The link in the story between contemporary times and the past is gripping as well as the commentary on religion and the Salem Witch Trials. I especially liked that Ms. Crouch uses so much detail when describing Salem in 1692. The houses, the way they talked, dressed, lived was all very detailed. She uses real names and events to depict Deliverance’s demise. She definitely did her research and it was neat to read that she was related to two of the named witches. I highly recommend this. This book will be available in June, so make sure to make a note of it and put it on your TBR list so you don’t forget to pick up a copy. In my opinion, you will not be disappointed. I’m dying to see what the finished product will look like - since I only have an ARC. But the binding, with its flap covering the pages, beautiful artwork, and thick paper makes this book quite a treasure.

I tried reading this on my own in college as part of a "self improvement" kick. You know, read more classics and all that. Yeah, I couldn't make it through. Hated it then. Picked it up again because I promised an English major friend I'd read it. Forced myself all the way through. Couldn't stand it. Hated every character in the book. Will never attempt again!

Excellent children's historical novel about a fascinating mathematician and scientist. Latham makes him very likeable and his world very real. Donovan enjoyed it too.

I loved the series, but I found spots in this particular book a tad thin. Collins did q great job resolving an epic tale!

This was a really great overview of poisons, both in telling great stories of poisonings, as well as giving some technical information on the effects of several poisons. My favorite part though was probably where they were discussing the puffer fish and its use in "zombification" according to Vodoo religions.

Atwood provides a suspenseful story of a Toronto servant. Fascinating characters, vivid imagery, and a main character who you're never quite sure about make it an intriguing read. Captivating and engaging, but long, so make sure you have the time and interest.

Dennett is a proud atheist, and he does not back away from his convictions. He is able to singlehandedly defeat many Christian conventions that have become acceptable to our modern American society through the use of pure, philosophic logic that works well to break us all out of the spell in which we have been living all of our lives as members of a "Christian Nation" (to quote Sam Harris). He use of example and parable makes the book invaluable to anyone who wants a new way of loking at the convention of religion in general, as long as you get through it without becoming offended (which I did, because I believe his thought processes to be both sound and beautiful).

This book is NOT: 1) a collection of horror stories. If you want such stories, go see The Exorcist or The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Granted, this book presents an assortment of possession stories, but does not go into great gory details. And if present, the stories mainly serve as illustrations for the theological/pastoral descriptions. If you're expecting a freak show, you'll be disappointed; 2) a recollection of an exorcist's day-to-day life. It's not even a recollection of an exorcist's job!; 3) an anthology of exorcism ritual texts; 4) a detailed explanation on demonology or angelology; 5) a fairytale-natured book aiming to sow the seeds of false optimism and arrogance about human's power over the demons. What the book IS: 1) Catholic and Christ-centered. Definitely!; 2) an honest (neither exaggerating nor underestimating) description about the nature of demons and demonic activities; 3) an "Exorcism 101". What I mean by "Exorcism 101" is that Fr. Amorth's book does not place a special emphasis on just a single aspect of exorcism. Rather, it touches on many factors: the nature of Christ, the angels, and the demons; forms and characteristics of diabolic activities; and the basic theories of exorcism---what it is, who can do it, when should it be done, why it should it be done, and how it should be done. Although not by any means extensive, readers will be pleasantly fulfilled, and believers especially, will likely to have their faith renewed. Fr. Amorth's book is powerful indeed; it serves as a reminder (or warning?) for us that the force of evil very much exists and is very active.

Before I rip into the novel, I want to say that there were many things about this book that I quite enjoyed. There is no doubt in my mind that Stiefvater is a good writer and her prose is lyrical and at times haunting. The concept of the werewolves and the setting were both fascinating in my opinion as well. The problem in my eyes, was that the plot, such as it was, was very, very thin. There seemed to be vague hints of a real plot here and there, but most of the time I felt like I was reading about Sam's fight against the cold- over and over again. There were some interesting plot elements that were thrown in here and there- Beck, Isabel, Jake, Olivia- but they never seemed to coalesce into a unified plot, rather they just seemed to be thrown in at will to fill the pages. Most of the characters were somewhat filled out, even though Grace fell quite flat to me. Grace's obsession with the wolves struck me as bizarre and kind of creepy, particularly since she didn't know what they really were at the beginning. I thought Sam was the most interesting of the cast of characters. Sam loves language and poetry and words- writing (godawful) lyrics in his head- and his struggle with his animal nature is one which involves his desire to keep his "words" and not have to leave them behind and succumb to his baser instincts. I thought Stiefvater captured that nuance brilliantly. Ultimately, a comparison to Twilight must be made, and in contrast to the Twilight series, the supernatural abilities of the wolf pack seem sometimes to be more of a "disability" rather than a key to a rarefied, preternatural world which renders them aristocracts because of their immortality and impossible beauty. To me, that got old fast, as I think that many wish to enter the supernatural world in fiction as a form of escape from society's strictures and as a means of entering the mystery of the woods and the unexplained. In this novel, the werewolves are just as "trapped" in their existence as your typical angsty adolescent and while I can see the appeal to said demographic, for me, it got old very quickly.
