Read this book not for the title by any means but because the author was Sindhi (same community as me) and thought there might be something I could connect to. A couple of moments in the book were cute but not something I would recommend.

This one tells the story of Brenna and Judd. Brenna's the changeling who was kidnapped and tortured during the first book of the series. Judd's the Psy assassin who fled with his family from the PsyNet to escape rehabilitation and ended up living with the dominant wolf-changeling pack. Wow this stuff sounds far-fetched, but that's paranormal romance for you. I didn't expect to enjoy this book too much. I was resentful of how the first two books dealt with Psy females who were so emotionally damaged from the Silence Protocol (brainwashing that prevents all emotion), and then when we have a Psy male and a changeling female instead, it's still the female who's portrayed as the victim needing protection. Well...that's paranormal romance for you. As it turned out, Judd had his own fair share of problems so it wasn't quite as bad as I was anticipating, but Brenna's constant breakdowns, irrationality and fixation on Judd got on my nerves. Yeah, I know she has to fixate on Judd for the book to work, but it was distasteful to watch. Also, there was a big discrepancy between the way the characters were described by the narrative and what they were actually like. It was constantly emphasized how Judd was totally Silent and his will was so strong and he was so closed off, but he made very little attempt to resist Brenna's advances. As for Brenna, okay okay I know she was tortured and traumatized, but I got sick of how we were always being told how astoundingly strong she was when she kept on freaking out and doubting her sanity and going to Judd for hugs. Probably my biggest complaint was the over-the-top generic stuff that keeps on appearing in these books. The "she was so good and pure but he was full of darkness" crap. I mean, fine, let him be full of darkness, but in that case, at least have him kill a few people in a gory way to prove it... Judd threatened plenty of people in this book, but I don't remember him killing anyone. Oh, and another thing. Brenna, halfway through the book, turns out to be some kind of computer genius? Yeah right. It felt like the author was throwing us a bone. Well, that's paranormal romance for you. That said...I am REALLY looking forward to the next book!! It tells the story of Clay and some woman named Talin. I read the excerpt of it included at the back of this book and it sounds great. The excerpt for Caressed By Ice that was included at the back of the second in the series didn't leave me nearly so excited. At the same time though, I feel a bit cheated. I've been really really looking forward to this book. Now after months of anticipation, I got it, read it in an afternoon, only moderately enjoyed it, and now just like that I'm back to eagerly waiting for the next one. It's a vicious cycle.

Melkorka is an Irish princess in Medieval times. Melkorka and her youngest sister Brigid are sent away before a possible Viking attack when they are captured by a slave ship. Melkorka now must "hush" as her mother always told her in order to possibly save her life and dignity. Brigid escapes leaving Malkorka on her own to survive. We follow her time building bonds with the other prisoners and trying to avoid being sold as a slave. This Icelandic folktale was beautifully retold and my only complaint was that the ending seemed to sudden and when you read the authors note you find out there was so much more to Melkorka's tale.

I love Cormac McCarthy. I love is images of the west. I love the simple but oh so detailed descriptions that tell me the things I wouldn't think to imagine without his help. This book is decidedly less visual, probably because McCarthy has chosen to describe a place where there isn't much description. The story, though there really isn't much story, though it’s made up for by a lot of walking, is a boy and his father walk south sometime 7 or so years after the apocalypse. What I love most about the story is that we never have any idea what caused the apocalypse, all we know is what the father knows, which isn't much, since pretty much everything was destroyed. It's just a poignant image of how one might deal with the reality that there really is no future to speak of. A disclaimer should be noted: if you are as personally affected by the books you read as I am, wait for a cheerful sunny summer day to read this. I was depressed for the whole time I was reading it, plus a little bit afterwards and it took me a while to realize it was the book and not my life that was depressing.

Long and complex book, a little scary. I found myself worrying about the condition of my brain and how long into the future it would continue to function. I'm not sure all the details of this book made total sense. It also had a bit of an unrealistic, good guy doesn't die ending. Maybe that would have suited at another time, but I feel now that the ending was naive.

I wanted to shoot everyone in this book by the 100th page, or at least send them to a good therapist. but I loved reading it anyway. it's fun to read something that is uncomplicated and this sensational. kind of trashy, but I say that in the most loving way possible.
