It’s the most known book and one of the first, if not the first, regarding usability of web sites. I’ve heard lot of good things about it before reading it, but it disappointed me a bit - for me the book is too general and author is too talkative. I would also expect more examples explained. It will be very valuable for a novice in the subject though, as it covers basic stuff explained in a simple way that any person, not necessarily being a developer, will understand.

Excellent look at colonialism from a personalised perspective. Amazing and vivid imagery and intricate connection to 'Jane Eyre', it gives a past to 'Jane Eyre's' 'mad woman in the attic' before she was colonised and married off into the white world. You dont have to have read 'Jane Eyre', it functions perfectly as a novel in its own right but the parallels to Bronte's novel are haunting if you're familiar with it.

This is one of those books I've come to think of as the Everything Is Illuminated sub-genre: we've reached the time that the generation of kids whose grandparents were Holocaust victims are writing books about it and they all have a similar theme of survival (obvs) and of history and narrative-- the importance of telling a story in order to define oneself, one's culture, and one's experience. This novel has a lot of delightful elements and several instantly compelling characters. It manages to weave together 3 different narrators telling 3 different stories very well. I figured out the essential plot twist early on, but the experience of being led there was still enjoyable and surprising. I do think, however, that a 4th narrator introduced late in the book to lead to the reveal was unnecessary and a bit of a cheat so as to keep the reader in the dark a little longer, which I think made the ending less compelling than it should have been. Also, I felt that the final pages introduced another "twist" that was not fully explained or explored, leaving the reader confused just when he or she should be enjoying the final emotional moments. Overall, the journey was worth the somewhat shaky ending and I think that the author successfully explored the concepts she set for herself.

Once in awhile, a novel comes along that leaves you pondering long after you’ve put it down. It’s wisdom implores you to explore further the subtle nuances of meanings within the context of your own life. Astrid and Veronika is just such a book. The story is set in Sweden, where a young writer, Veronika, has rented a summer home, to work on her novel. She develops an unlikely friendship with a solitary older woman who lives in a lonely house near her in the countryside. I love the friendship that develops between the two women. During my own life, I have experienced friendships with women that are older than I, and often those are my favorite and most cherished relationships. In the readers guide at the back of the novel, the author relates a story about her own grandmother: “I first visited her in her home in Anaheim, California. One evening, we cooked together. Grandmother made her famous blueberry pie and I my fish soup. As we stood in her kitchen, she suddenly looked up from her work. ‘It’s a pity we are not the same age, you and I,’ she said. ‘We would be best friends.’ I looked back at her and said, ‘We are.’” Both the characters in the book have experienced love and loss. And death. Olsson shows us how many people deal with death and lost love through her characters, and in doing so, we see a bit of ourselves. As their friendship grows, they each learn some valuable lessons about life. One of my favorite passages is in the letter Astrid leaves for Veronika at the end of the book: “Love comes to us with no forewarning, and once given to us it can never be taken away. We must remember that. It can never be lost. Love is not measurable. It cannot be counted in years, minutes or seconds, kilos and grams. It cannot be quantified in any way. Nor can it be compared, one with the other. It simply is. The briefest brush with real love can sustain you for a lifetime. We must always remember that.” No person can escape being touched by death and loss. Astrid and Veronika shows us that love can overcome anything. 4 1/2 stars.

I've noticed that a lot of Christopher Moore fans don't care for this book. Being the first CM book I've ever read, I enjoyed it. I love re-tellings of the life of Jesus, especially since the Bible leaves a lot to speculation. Making it a comedy does a lot to humanize Jesus, though he is "perfect" (in keeping with Biblical cannon) he is distinctly human. The best thing about this book is that it won't necessarily offend Christians. Of course, there are some people who take offense at everything and will loudly protect their faith from every perceivable threat; you know these people, they made a stink about Harry Potter, they're people who don't actually read the books that they claim glorify witchcraft and demons, so this review isn't really for them anyway. The majority of Christians, the non-fanatics, will not find anything in this book that satirizes their religion or any religion. I think it's very refreshing to read a book about religious icons by a secular author that doesn't hate on faith (I'm looking at you Mr. Dawkins.) Coming back to this being the only Moore book I've ever read, I think the reason is that I don't find Vampires all that interesting, though I'm sure I could if the book were ROFL-funny. I'm probably going to need something funny when I'm done with my Gothic Fiction binge. As of now, I'm taking suggestions.

This book was VERY hard too put down! It's nothing like I've read before and I enjoyed every part of it! Some books I've read have dry spots or become very boring, well this book makes you crave for more. I'm glad I bought this book and can't wait for my friends and family too read this!
