I need to read the Cliff's Notes! We read this as Book #13 for the Lovely Ladies Book Club. We had great discussions about the themes involved but I couldn't help but feel like I was missing out on a lot of that key info that my english teacher sould have shared with me--Lenina/Lenin, Bernard Marx/George Bernard Shaw/Karl Marx, Polly Trotsky--I don't know enough to get the references.

What can I say i just love Solomon vs. Lord series very very much. The books were always funny and interesting and to read about Steve and Victoria is never disappointing. I hope the author decides to write some more books to this series. I already miss the characters...

What a great story! It totally captivated me and it was "never boring"...as Dragos says: "You're complicated. I am not bored." Pia is a very interesting character. She starts out on the run because she stole something and has to put a binding charm on her ex-boyfriend so he won't tell anyone anything about her.....what?? The great part is that we're only told so much at a time so we really don't know everything till almost the end. Then there's Dragos. I think I like the whole sweet cave man thing. He's really such a big, mean dragon but inside he's really sweet. Ok...well, he's really sweet with Pia. I loved how they both "handled" each other. All the characters pretty much grow on you. I don't think there were any I didn't like...except the bad guys of course. They are all very interesting "Wyr's" as well. I'm already looking forward to reading several character's book. This book has just about everything....mystery, action, love, sex, humor and lots of snark. I definitely recommend it. Favorite line: "That's my long, scaly, reptilian tail. And it's bigger than anyone else's"

“ Just by looking at me, everyone can see that I am a child of rape.” Onyesonwu lives in a future Sudan. Her mother is Okeke, her father is Nuru and she is Ewu. The Nurus have enslaved the Okeke and want to rid the world of them. Onyesonwu (view spoiler) is a sorceress. She can take the shape of animals, travel great distances, including into the spirit world, and become invisible. She sets off west to kill her father and heal the people and land, on a hero’s journey, with Mwita, her lover who is also a healer and some girlfriends. I really enjoyed this sometimes hard to read novel, that sometimes felt like fantasy from the past, other times felt like reporting from the present and only in the end is there one scene that positively sets it in the future. I recommend it highly. Though it's just June, I'm pretty sure this going to be one of the best books I've read this year.
among the many things I enjoyed reading Cloud Atlas: Mitchell cites Primo Levi twice, once openly when Cavendish cites 'the drowned and the saved', then when Zachry mentions in his memories that in war good shoes are more important than food (and war is always), this is straight out of 'the truce' (or reawakening).

I did not get to read all of it since there is another library hold on it, but enjoyed the daily meditations and thoughts on staying present during difficult times.

I will admit up front: I am biased. David Halperin, the author of this book, was one of the members of the writing group I started in North Carolina ten years ago. I read two of his previous (unpublished) novels. I have a high opinion of David, and I feel a great amount of joy that he's published this novel. That being said, this is a very good book. I love the layers, and the way he plays with time. I love the interplay of myth, and the doubt about reality. I love the very literal and intense way that Danny, the main character, grows up. There's this understanding acquired through pain, this leaving behind of loved ones, this learning to live with regret, this feeling of ineluctable otherness, that I think mirrors emotionally the way it feels to be a teenager. Danny writes, "Here's what I think: when we watch the sky, we're looking in the wrong direction. The real mystery is right here among us." I look forward to reading this book again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I felt at times, the author had taken on too many characters. A couple of times I would struggle to keep up with who was who. However, it had some great twists and turns in it. It was really exciting, a great page turner!
