A nice selection of Simenon's stories featuring Maigret. The first stories are relatively brief, but the last 7 are more lengthy and substantial reads. Good introduction to Simenon - especially the last stories.

I read this first in 2011 but reread it prior to the release of the fifth book. That being said, I'm really glad that I did as I began the full series for a reread, and there is so much more to be enjoyed in the fifth book. While I did enjoy this book, and Ms. Clare's writing overall, I like the relationship developing between Simon and Isabelle the best. I can't quite grasp where the author is going with it, but I do enjoy seeing it unfold. The inclusion of Simon's Mark of Cain was particularly effective in the final scenes with Lilith (and knowing how it plays out is an added bonus writing this). A few complaints . . . the whole "Scooby Gang" seems to be over-relying on a bit on Magnus to get them out of all their issues, and it's getting a little on the old side. And I don't know why, after three prior book covers, the publisher decided to show any of their faces . . . not cool.

This book is based off the notes Calvino had prepared for a lecture. Unfortunately, he died before he could deliver the lecture, leaving us with only five completed memos out of the six he had originally planned on writing. The five essays contained here, though, are some of the most engaging essays on literature that I've ever read. Combining his own insights with personal anecdotes and passages from other works, Calvino highlights some attributes of writing that he finds/found "best." The essays are written in a conversational tone: reading them feels like you're sitting down and talking with a favorite professor. This collection could be read straight through or in pieces, one essay at a time. Either way, it's well worth the time to see what one great author enjoys most in literature.

This is my favorite Shakespeare play thus far, although I have a modest track record in Shakespeare reading. Sure I loved Richard III for his character- downright evil w/ next to no redeeming qualities, but Macbeth...he wasn't so bad at the beginning- in fact he was a brave, admirable man! It was those doggone hags (old spinsters ruin everything in olde British literature) that were his demise! I was haunted by Macbeth's beautiful speech after Lady Macbeth is pronounced dead, but who wasn't. That alone was enough for me to fall in love with Macbeth, a timeless play.

This was my favourite Tim Winton book, even though it never really seemed to win the popularity of some of his other titles. It's told from the perspective of a little boy, and it melted my heart. It ended with a miracle - always a risky way to finish a novel, but it really worked. Another tear jerker.

Good resource for sprouting methods. I like that the book describes a few different ways you can grow sprouts from things you have at home. Has short descriptions of various sprouts. Seems to lacks some info, for example, Spouts the Miracle Food says you need to boil green pea sprouts before eating but this books says nothing about that. Is it really needed? Is it preference? These are questions I still need to answer.

Room was an interesting read. Since I teach kindergarten right now, I found the various activities that Ma came up with to teach Jack interesting, though I have to admit to finding it a bit of a boring section of the book - granted, there is a certain kind of boredom that comes from interacting only with young children for a long period of time, so that did add a bit to the feel of the read. Narrating the book in Jack's voice was interesting, especially as it helped layer on the sense of Ma's struggle to find herself outside of her child. One thing that this book brings up, and Ma comments on it in the interview she does is that people react to the idea of a five year old being breastfed with a lot of disgust or discomfort - Ma asks why that is the part of this situation that people find strange. I've noticed in discussions about the book that readers have a similar negative response to the breastfeeding that seems to be stronger than their reaction to the kidnapping. I have to say, it disturbs me that so many people from Western cultures react in this way - after all, breastfeeding children that are older is not abnormal in all cultures and I strongly feel that it shouldn't be perceived as disgusting. It's too bad I didn't read the book for a book club because I think it would be more interesting to discuss than it was to read.
