Fire Season Field Notes From A Wilderness by Philip Connors was a delightful surprise on many levels. I have a longterm history of loving the southwest and a great appreciation for authors such as Edward Abbey. Mr. Connors follows in the fire lookout footsteps of luminaries such as Mr. Abbey, Jack Kerouac, and Normal Maclean. He has served up a a truly wonderful narrative on life and the affect that man and fire have had in the mountains of the southwest. Fire Season is basically two narratives in one. Mr. Connors alternates between sharing his own stories and ruminations on life as a fire lookout atop Apache Peak as well as giving the reader an overall history of the mountains of New Mexico and the evolution of forestry response to fire beginning with the creation of the Forest Service in 1905. In many regards it is part memoir and part forestry lesson. While I enjoyed this book a great deal, it is not for everyone. For those who turn a blind eye toward history this book will probably miss the mark. For those with an appreciation of nature and how complex dynamics such as livestock grazing, watersheds, fire suppression, and bureaucratic blunder affect our natural world, this book will probably be a wise choice. Having spent many of my formative years hiking the trails and fishing the waters of Oregon, I felt quite at home and really enjoyed myself. While I enjoyed both aspects of the book, I found myself pushing through to the parts where Mr. Connors romanticized his personal experiences of life as a lookout. His observations and descriptions of detail were both interesting and educational for me. Not to say that the history lessons were not interesting, because they were, but I preferred to read his words on the experience of living atop a 10,000 foot mountain for 100 plus days a year. I would whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone who can appreciate a good nature read, especially those with a bent toward the southwest.

I liked this book, but not as much as the others by Gladwell. It's possible that because I read it last, his approach and style was less fresh. I also just finished Predictably Irrational, and the books have some similar themes, and have some similar examples as well. I thought it was interesting to contrast how Ariely and Gladwell looked at something like the difference between Coke and Pepsi. Overall, this is a book talking about the benefits and pitfalls of snap decisions. I liked it more than I thought I would, and thought it was pretty interesting. I particularly liked the parts that talked about how you can improve the way you read people, or put yourself in positions to make better decisions. I always like it when they include steps a person can take to improve.

Ginny said: A fascinating read. It’s not just the story of the fire, but also describes historical trends--NYC politics and the labor movement—that preceded and followed the fire. There is some great historical detail here and von Drehle is a wonderful writer. The fire and its immediate aftermath are heartbreaking and so is the list of the dead at the end of the book. Highly recommended.

This is a surprisingly difficult book to get into which requires more time and attention than I could give it when almost all my Christmas shopping had yet to be done. If only a very impressive old man sort of appeared out of nowhere handed me the presents to give along with the names of whom I was to give them ;) I read large chunks of the book so far, including the ending, but can't truthfully say I feel I've read it yet.

Karen Chance is one of my absolute favorite new authors. The universe that she has created in her Cassie Palmer and Dorina Basarab companion series is one of the freshest, most imaginative that I have come across in ages, and her character development and dialogue is excellent. I am never bored or groaning about weak plots or predictable dialogue when reading Karen's books. Having said all of that, I LOVE Dory! She has officially become my favorite character and I have not been disappointed at all with the sophomore book in her storyline. My only regret is that I'm going to have to wait for the next book. Thank goodness the new Cassie book release date is just around the corner! (I've got my fingers crossed that Dory and Cassie will meet each other.) Way to go, Karen! Another amazing book in an already fantastic series. Good on you, girl!!

Honestly, this book kinda blows.
I wanted very much to like this book. The summary, the reviews, made it sound like a book I would like; a book about women, getting together and discussing Jane Austen, living their lives and dealing with heartaches in between. Well, I did like it, just not very much. It's well-written, it's amuzing in parts, and I was very fond on the focus on politeness that all the women seemed to share. The focus on appearances and exteriors of kindness. It's not something you see much in books, or anywhere, these days. But the book didn't go deep enough. It's impossible to care deeply for six characters in only 250 pages. I was interested in Prudie, and I really liked Allegra, but the other women were almost caricatures. And the men--even the one man in the book club--are plot devices, romantic foils. Not complete in themselves. I wouldn't recommend this, but if someone were interested in the subject matter, I'd go ahead and tell them to give it a go.
I forgot I hadn't read the chapter on McKinley (after the fantastic chapter on Lincoln, I got bored and skimmed through the one on Garfield.) so i decided to go back and do so. Vowell isn't really as funny as everyone says, I mean I just didn't laugh as much as I wished I had. Still I learned a lot and that's pretty exciting, considering I'm quite the history buff. Her writing style is perfect for a society who loves their news with a healthy side of gossip.

I am ready for the movie! Such a sad way for humanity to treat human beings.

I read this as a pre-teen and again when my kids were pre-teens. It's a good book, but ironically I can't say it actually prepared me much for my teen years. It's probably best utilised by being read to a child and used as a springboard for discussion, rather than given to a child to read on their own.
