One of the things I loved about it was the world that Collins created. I know this isn't an unique concept, a dystopian world controlled by the state, but I still thought her world was unique. I know this isn't how it is portrayed the book, but I pictured their world like a flower, with the capital in the center and the 13 districts surrounding it. I liked how each district had its own identity, how the goods that it produced shaped the skills and personalities of the people living within. I loved Katniss, the book did a great job of letting the reader get to know her who she was. Her ability to distance herself from her emotions saved her life. She stayed calm and was able to observe her situation and because of this learned a lot that she used later to save her life. She wasn't completely cut off either, she still felt these emotions, she just hid them from the public and only let them out in private. Yet this was also her weakness. At times she appeared cold to the other characters, and hurt people who were important to her. I felt bad for her a times because I understood that she was only trying to protect herself and those around her. She may have appeared cold but it was just her way of dealing with the hard circumstances around her. She is a stong female character, who doesn't like that? I also like how the book rewarded her compassion. It did a good job of saying that when you are kind to others, even if its seems pointless at the time, it will pay off later. I thought this was a great book. It rewarded, kindness, resourcefulness, compassion, and braveness, all within a dangerous and brutal backdrop.

Before you read the book, you should be aware that the editor of this book is thought to be the actual writer who has based the story off of journal entries and testimonies of the teens she has counseled over the years. There are other books she has published similarly--one in which the teen on question spoke on record to say that his "diary" had been altered to suit a fictional plot, including his suicide/death, which had obviously not happened. You can decide if you'd like to believe it is fact or fiction. As a fictional piece of work, it's kinda crummy. The journal entries are very basic and unimaginative. Descriptions are vague, where many real teens could drone on and on about certain topics. For example, the girl's obsession with boys can hardly be considered such, as she never dwells on their looks and flirts. Most things are simple described as "great," which, as another reviewer said, sounds like the author's attempt at mimicking the apathetic (and stereotypical) personality of teenagers. However, it lead to a very dull storyline. The ideas and scares and thrills of drugs, rape, running away, and homelessness are the only hooks in this book to keep you reading, rather than well-developed characters, vivid details, and carefully structured plot. I think, though, that it is worth reading once just to get an idea of the kind of world one teenage drug-addict lived in. Also, it has a few good warnings, such as, don't trust a food or drink at a party (it could be laced or spiked), and your friends are not always trustworthy (some may intentionally lace your drink and/or lead you to or cause rape). It's a good intro book to other drug and alcohol related books which hold more truth and details.
