Not my favorite of Orson Scott Card's books, but still a good read.
I was recommended this novel by a college friend when we were both Freshman at Monmouth College (now University) in West Long Branch, New Jersey. We both were book addicts and one day when we got together for some afternoon sun and lunch outside the student center she couldn't stop raving about this novel. Knowing I was not a big horror fan but liked stories about vampires, she was convinced this was one I would enjoy. She was not kidding. From the minute I picked it up I could not put it down. It was a real page turner for me. Ms. Rice not only write some very fascintating charcters but her description of New Orleans and then of Paris left me feeling like I was not just reading the novel but standing in the shadows as this one unfolded. I recently tried to get a friend of mine to read it. She started it and had to put it down. It was way to disturbing for her. In retrospect, I had forgotten some of the violence of the novel and of the antics of the Vampire Lestat but this one to me is a pure modern day horror classic. I went on to eventually read the main novels of the Vampire Chronicles and enjoyed each and every one of them.
This was mostly an annoying book. It took about 190 pages before the plot went anywhere. The constant references and notations were funny and clever at first, but got really old really fast. They also interfered with the flow, in my humble opinionn. In the last third of the book, the plot picked up, but it was too late for me by then. I finished it only because it was a book club read; otherwise, I would have left it alone. The book should have been about 200 pages and 200 notations shorter.

I had seen the movie version of this before I read it... and since I really like the movie, I thought I would like the book too. And I did like the book, but the movie differed a lot from the book. For one thing, the main character doesn't build a time machine for his dead fiancee... he just builds it because he can and he wants to time travel. Although, they don't change (at least, I don't think they did) any character names, so in that way the movie was true to the book. It was a really interesting read... a bit dry at times, but overall very enjoyable.
This is a fun book in the spirit of George Mann's Ghosts of Manhattan, though lighter at least in tone if not in events which turn darker in the second half. Superheroes and steampunk in a true age of steam and in New York rather than London at about the time the Brooklyn Bridge was being built - that would be ~1880 and see note below - since the novel starts with a superb action sequence on its construction site - the book moves fast and furious and it delivers what I expected of it quite well with only one niggle, namely it's a little too short and it ends when things become the most interesting with not quite a cliffhanger, but not even a partial resolution either... Though of course this means the sequel became an asap for me since I really want to know what happens next The other thing I liked about the book beside the setting and author's narrative flow that does not let go, were the characters since despite starting as more-or-less stock (the genius professor, the rich industrialist playing at superhero, the young up and coming blade , "the girl" aka the daughter of the industrialist, the mechanical man and the famous detective superhero, plus the assorted villains, all with funny names but in the spirit of the tale told here) they develop in sometimes unexpected directions and acquire distinctive personalities, most notably the main heroine Sarah Stanton and Tom the mechanical man with a secret. One thing confused me a little though, namely there is a mention the book takes place in 1808 which does not sound right the way things are set as noted above, but it may be a typo - after all I read a review copy which may not be the final edited copy that will appear in stores in May - for 1880 which would be about right (note - as seen in the comments below, the action takes place in 1880 and that was indeed a typo) Fun and fast debut which succeeds at what it promises As usual the full FBC rv will be added closer to the publication date

This is an amazing book and is great 2 read @ night. It is separated into chapters so that each chapter is a different year. It is very short though.

Still reading it but I have all day in Zach's class cause they are having a read a thon. I was so excited to get this book and the kids are loving it too. I hope that I can finish this weekend. It's driving me crazy. We have finished the book and the fifth one has to come out soon. It's killing me. The kids loved it and we are now waiting.
my sister and a group of her friends (all under 20) put on this play, among others, for charity. maybe i'm simply not that experienced when it comes to plays, but i absolutely loved what they made of it. the characters may be extraordinary people, but they struggle with what are really ordinary issues when you strip away the details - trust, love, betrayal. the performance made me want to find the script, so i was delighted to see it pop up while i was randomly going through the quiz because i was rather at a loss for where to find it.
