It's in the running to be my favorite Palahniuk book, but for the time being I'm just going to say it's my second favorite just so none of the other books get offended. I don't know what it is about death cults but between them and hitching a ride around the country in the back of those prefabricated homes that are always taking up 1.5 lanes on the freeway, this book has nearly everything I like in a story.

An interesting part of this book was when she went to Mani for a Baptism of a son of a Tiburon family in that very old village we drove thru as recommended by Eleni -Areopolis. They went to Limeni village and looks like they stayed at that hotel built like turrents, where we stayed and went to "our" restaurant.
Modestly creepy "literary" "thriller" by the dude who wrote The Butcher Boy, the final word in Celtic violence-porn literature. I am not particularly a fan. I like my unreliable narrators a little more reliable than this. Additionally, the central theme of modernity=sterile-but-easy vs. the archaic=primal-"real"-but-bugfuck-crazy strikes me as simplistic in the extreme. Further, the exploitation of sexual abuse as a fallow field for psycho production is really played-out and irritating.
The title of our improv group so I had to read the book.

Sam Vimes travels in time and it's as wibbly-wobbly as any time traveller could want, and Sam Vimes is heroic. In fact we get a triple dose of Vimes, since his wife Sybil has gone into labour and he's mentoring his younger self in the past, asking himself the perennial question: "Was I ever that young?"

This series is great because it's unique and a great story. The first book in which you are introduced to Ayla, who I think is one of the greatest heroines in literature.

This was a very imaginative, fresh, and lovable read but I have just one complaint: wah. I was rooting for the Black Knight. lol
I've been reading Colin Bateman ever since the wonderful 'Divorcing Jack' but fell out of love with his style and gradually stopped looking for his books. I picked up Dr. Yes in an airport not knowing it's the 3rd in a series which started with 'Mystery Man'. Even though the characters were not familiar to me I found the book to be a very funny , enjoyable read. I don't think Bateman has changed style at all, maybe for me it is just a case of absence making the heart grow fonder. He is still a laugh out loud funny writer with a dark edge. Highly recommended for anyone who likes this style and I'm definitely going to read the first 2 books in the series.

I can't remember why I loathed this book -- purple, narcissistic prose, perhaps.
