Picks up right where "Crispin: the Cross of Lead" leaves off. In this story Crispin and Bear encounter a new companion and cross the English Channel to France.

A grim but thought-provoking read. I really enjoyed it - perhaps because I read it a second time for a bookclub discussion. Sometimes reading and discussing it with others adds another dimension to the book. One of the things we discussed was rather Winston was a hero or not. He does not seem heroic - he is thin, not very robust, aging, kind of an ordinary guy. But, despite his weaknesses, he is rejecting the prevailing attitudes/conventions – seeking answers to the slivers of memories he has. I certainly sympathized with him. Could he be considered a hero because of his acts of revolution (the diary, his affair with Julia, etc)? He is aware of the danger (the almost certitude) that accompanies these actions but he proceeds nonetheless. This line from the book (last part, chapter 3) gave me pause. O’Brien said: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever. Winston did have an amazing job! One thing from the novel that I keep coming back to was how everyone was watched everywhere. Even in their homes they had to be in view of the camera at certain times. Like Winston, I would have hated that. The Ministry of Love was such a misleading name. You would think they were arranging marriages or love between people but they were just enforcing love and loyalty to Big Brother by fear, torture and brainwashing of people. And the Ministry of Truth was responsible for rewriting history and changing facts to fit party doctrine.

** spoiler alert ** okay so after 12 weeks give or take and renewing 3 times (library said i hit my max renewal limit) i finally finished the book. the author has a good command of the english language and from eloquence point was written well. my issue is with the overall plotline. don't read further if you don't want to know what happens in the book. why is it that that the dad gets killed somewhere around ~p.130 and the the real confrontation doesn't happen til ~500 something?? Also I do not think they really ever gave a good explanation about the fight between Claude and Gar which caused Claude to move out. Also what was the reason for Claude to kill his own brother, I don't think this was well explained either. If you aren't into dogs, dog breeding and such skip the book, since most of the book is really about this.

I received this book as a part of the Early Reviewers Program on Library Thing. I really enjoyed the story of Jack the Boston Terrier and his family. The story held my attention and after the first couple of chapters the story moved very quickly. I found several editing/printing errors and this sort of thing gets on my nerves quickly, but the story was very compelling and I was able to overlook the errors that I found. Anyone who enjoys books about religious myths and the mysteries of religion should find this book really fascinating. I hope anyone who reads this book enjoys it as much as I have. It appears there may be a sequel and I can’t wait to read it.

"Clickety-click. Tickety-tick. Knitty kitty sits and knits." The perfect book to read on a winter's night. Spare writing, cozy illustrations.
I am currently reading this book and I can't seem to put it dwon its great!
Who knew Niffenegger was an artist as well as a rather brilliant writer? This book goes a long way to prove she is simply brilliant, regardless of her media. Search for it, and you won't be disappointed!
a self-help book veiled as literature. not interested in being beat over the head with a message that any good book lets you discover for yourself and make your own. blech.
I added this book to my Goodreads queue because I needed to add a debut novel and someone mentioned it was interesting. I don't even remember who recommended it, and that's a shame because this is a wonderful YA book. Katie Kittrel has a lot going for her. She's smart, pretty, and an incredible swimmer. Unfortunately, her family is totally screwed up. In fact, her parents basically give-up on trying to be parents and ship Katie off to boarding school in West Virginia while they try to piece her crazy brother, Will, back together again. At boarding school, Katie has the opportunity to create a new life for herself, but soon realizes that she can only keep her family secrets hidden for so long. Many of the scenes in Breathless were so real and so poignant, it hurt to read them. Jessica Warman captures dysfunctional family dynamics and nasty power struggles between women perfectly without going overboard. Even though Breathless tackles issues of classism, religion, homophobia and friendship with brutal honesty, the story is so compelling, it's impossible to look away.
