I've read at least 2 in the series and this was a welcome addition to March Violets and A German Requiem. Why haven't I read A Pale Criminal? I shall soon. Philip Kerr's novels about Bernie Gunther are perfect for those of us who love thrillers about Germany, the lead-up to WWII, the war itself and the aftermath. Both sides of the story are revealed and Gunther is hard-boiled, realistic and a good(ish) guy in the very best German tradition. Never a Nazi, he does object to the post-war American assumption that the US have exclusive ownership of the high moral ground, especially when some of their methods of operation in occupied Germany in the mid-50s are every bit as bad as those they defeated. John Colapinto, a writer for Rolling Stone has been given the exclusive right to author the tale of David Reimer, who, a victim of a botched circumcision, had his sex reassigned at age two and lived the next twelve years as a girl. David is the victim of several doctors: the one who originally performed poorly at his circumcision; Dr. John Money, who used his considerable influence to convince David's parents to agree to the gender reassignment (and still to this day insists his treatment was a success); and later psychiatrists who, cowed by Money's prestige and influence, persisted in pushing him towards femininity. However, David has overcome. He is a happily married man, a father and a provider who, although still haunted by his unusual past, has come to terms with it and speaks out against the practice of gender reassignment to infants with damaged penises. Unfortunately, it has only been recently that other victims of this practice, members of ISNA (Intersex Society of North America) have been heard by the physicians and psychiatrists responsible for its continuation even today. I was also impressed with the depth of research done by the author, who, as an entertainment writer, was probably unprepared for the difficulty he would face in addressing this rather sensitive subject both with David's friends and family members and with members of the Sex Research community who still insist David's reassignment as Brenda was successful and that the author and his subject sensationalized this book for the money and film rights. This is an important book for any medical, psychiatry, or psychology student to read. Edit: I was not aware of David Reimer's eventual suicide until after I wrote this review, and wish to alter my assertion that David is 'happy' and has 'overcome.' Although the book ends on this note, several years later the situation is different.

One of the most inspiring books about the Great Beyond I've ever read--a true masterpiece of nonfiction. It informs, enlightens, and mystifies at the same time, all the while with the amazing narration of David Grinspoon harmonizing the prose perfectly throughout. And I met the guy, which makes it even cooler. If you ever wonder about What's Out There, this is the the book--die you Rare Earther scum, die!

Oh god. This book breaks my heart. It's just so beautiful. It reminded me a lot of Atonement, which another 5 star book, but I love this one nearly infinitely more. I like it so much that when it occurred to me that I was nearing 100 book I decided to save this one for special like. It's just fantastic. A book lovers book. If you don't at least like this book we can't be friends anymore.

Gave the audio a good try, but couldn't bear any more of the narrative nor of Johnny Depp's monotonous reading of it.

Bites Nabokov's style harder than a bear trap, which you can dress up like Elvis, but that don't make you the King. Points for the cute syllabus structure, and points for the careful and detailed narrative architecture. Ultimately, though, I have an extremely hard time generating any empathy at all for a protag who is a pretty, mentally gifted white girl with a trust fund and a Harvard admission ticket. Also, extra negative points for the cheesy avoidance of sexual detail...makes it feel like a Disney special.

I read this book in the early 1990s. I managed to finish this book, but it left me feeling squicky. I had no problem with the sex scenes, it's the weird words they use to describe things - like "carrot" - that really just bothered me. What amuses me the most about this book is that many people who are otherwise really prudish about these things have told me they loved this book (like my late mother, who also burned a copy of The Happy Hooker she found once she realized what it was about. Really, Mom? The Happy Hooker needs burning, but Lonesome Dove is alright then? Good grief - I never understood her to her dying day...) and just raved about it. So, this is what I gleaned from it: If you like romance novels, and if you like Westerns and if you think you'd really like something that mixes the two, you'll love this book. If you like the movie and TV series that spawned from this book, hey, more power to ya - my blessing upon thee. But me? Yuck. I'll be over here in the corner with my heavy metal and urban fantasies, thanks. You have a nice day.
