Fascinating read, really enjoyed it. The story of Bruce's search and his experiences in Australia and around the world was engaging and felt like he was sitting beside me espousing his theories of migratory society and the human as hunted to me personally. Like many of those experiences though, I sometimes wished he would shut up and stop reading out the many pages of his fieldwork notebooks that excited him so much and me a little less so. That being said, I don't think the story would have worked without them and Chatwin was just making us work a little harder to get to the end. And I do appreciate a narrative that makes me work. Quirky characters, a huge amount of information and a quiet storyline with the strength to bind it all together. Four out of Five.

Janie is coping with the horrors of starting high school. She really wants to be normal but she really isn't. She lives on a hobby farm and her mom blogs about living the simple life. She is in a new high school and all of her friends have different classes and a different lunch. She feels lost and alone. But gradually she begins making new friends including a boy named Monster and a girl named Verbena. Most of the adventures are the daily sort of thing but she does go with her dad, who teaches folklore at the university, to visit a man who was influential in the early days of the civil rights movement. Janie wants to live large like he did. Sweet story!

RANT I am already PO'd about this book and a few others published by PENGUIN PUBLISHING because they (apparently) think that charging $14.99 for a Kindle version and only $7.99 for their paperback will kill off ebooks. What idiots. Instead, I will just not buy this thing for a long time until the price goes down or I can get a used paperback someplace for a buck or two. I checked the prices for ebooks at all the big 3 and they are all selling the ebook for about twice what a paperback costs. Get this straight Penguin! I am boycotting your books that are overpriced in this manner in favor of other publishers that aren't rip-off artists. There are plenty of other series out right now that I like better than the last few BDB books, so this was not a smart move on your part. /RANT

I really liked it until the end. I felt it tied itself up as a children's book by the end.
A great, funny yet mysterious story. I loved how the author explains everything so well and expresses it too. I could easily imagine the story and the characters :). I can’t wait for the sequel.
i cant decide if i hated it for glamorizing the american dream or just hated it. would have to read it again but probably would hate it.

I've had this book on my mountainous To-Read list for well over three years. It's not the longest that a book has been on the list, but it's up there, and I think it's a shame it took me this long to get to this book. Because I really loved it. I thought it was gorgeously written, compelling, and intriguing, and it engrossed me almost from start to finish. I really enjoyed the characters, and man, would I have LOVED to read Julian Carax's books. They sound amazing. *ahem* Mr. Ruiz Zafón? I hope you wouldn't take it the wrong way if I were to ask if you might have copies of Carax's books, and say, if I were to humbly request that you publish them in English post-haste and then send me review copies? Whattaya say? Ehh? No? *sigh* Well, a girl can dream. I did love the circular nature of the story, and how every little story was a piece to the larger story, and how all of them were entwined with each other. If I had one complaint, it was that Daniel's and Julian's stories mirrored each other a little too closely. But that's a minor complaint, because I did like the similarities and the feeling of deja vu this led to, but it just seemed constructed that way, and I would have liked a little more variance than just the good luck vs bad luck divide. I was fascinated by Javier Fumero. He's the epitome of patience and planning, and that's what makes him so creepy. You never know where he's going to be, what he'll do, or when... you just know that he will be there some day, waiting for you, with an authority that allows him to do anything and get away with it. Terrifying! On the flip side was Fermin, who was hilarious and never ever at a loss for words. I loved his character, and I hope that maybe we might see more of him, perhaps? I really loved the mystery aspect, and though I figured out Lain Coubert's significance about mid-way through, I didn't feel disappointed like I usually do when I solve a mystery before the big reveal. I enjoyed the journey of hitching a ride with Daniel as he figured it out for himself. This is a fantastic story, and one I highly recommend. I can't wait to read more in this series, and more of Ruiz Zafón's (and Carax's... please please please!!) books.

I hated this book. Maybe I just don't like Gaiman's style, but after plowing through half of the book (filled with random, offensive, and at times indecipherable stories) I couldn't continue. The swearing, sex, and amoral content of the book was enough to turn my stomach. I would never recommend this book.
Very interesting book, but I think I missed a lot of underlying detail because of the vernacular. My imagination ran wild a few times while reading, which made for an interesting ride. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi mixed with politics and a little bit of science.

Oh my God....I thinks I'm still in shock. I really can't wait for the next one to come out.
