A more traditional adventure; this time Modesty and Willie have to save Sir Gerald from the evildoers who have captured him. I really liked this one for how quietly feminist it was; the men in Modesty's life never think less of her because she's female, but this is a really great reversal of the usual action/adventure stereotype of (male) hero having to save (female) love interest. (Not that Sir Gerald is her love interest, but still.) Very nicely low-key send-up of the traditional tropes.

Loved it! This story was much better than the first. The team, Zara, Nick, Issie and Dev are more proactive in this story and actually trying to find a way to solve their pixie problem where in the first story they were just reacting but not doing anything to help themselves. New characters, Astley and Cassidy are introduced and add more intrigue and drama. I love the chapter titles and the pixie advice that goes with each of them, very different. I would recommend for 7th grade and up.

I guess literature about Africa is all the rage these days. Horribly cheesy title aside, the book is amazing. It's a first-person account of an Ethiopian immigrant who came here almost 20 years ago, and has lived in essential isolations since then. The book goes back and forth between the present and the past, but it never gets confusing (somehow).

Katniss Everdeen is a hunter, even though hunting is forbidden. Ever since her father died in a mine explosion, and her mother's bout with depression afterwords, it has been up to her to keep food on the table. She lives in District 12, one of the poorest Districts of Panem, in what used to be the United States. Luckily for her, many of the town officials are partial to the meat she brings back as well, and are willing to overlook her methods of procuring it. Then comes the Reaping--the yearly lottery where one boy and one girl, ages 12-18, from each district are chosen to participate in the Hunger Games. The Games are meant to keep the districts in line after a failed rebellion years ago, and remind the people of their helplessness against the Capitol. The chosen youth are put into an arena filled with natural (and unnatural) terrain, where they fight to the death. Last one standing is the victor. Everyone back at home has to watch it all on TV. This year Katniss will be one of the contenders, but it will take much more than her skill with a bow to survive. Thought-provoking, disturbing, and completely mesmerizing. Must get the sequel.

Sixth in a now-extended to 15 book series, Carpe Corpus delivers exactly what readers of her Morganville series want: compelling teen romances, vampires, teenage romances with vampires. . . and a steampunk computer named Ada. Wait.. what? The last bit is a little out of character for the predictable but fun book, and in this series you have appreciate any innovation and newness where and when you can find it. Though not my favorite offering Ms. Caine has yet had for Claire and Company, like every other other novel before it, Carpe Corpus had me tearing through chapters in order to make sure all my favorites made it safe and sound to the end. Never to be labelled the most innovative or compelling reads, The Morganville Vampires series continues on its previous trend of easily readable, intensely fun young-adult books. Great book, this is what Doctor Who fans want in there novels. The Doctor hits the time travel trifecta, past, present and future. If you are wondering what the Doctor is all about and dont have time to catch a few episodes of the show this is a great book to pick up. Its a quick read and a rewarding one. I also recommend the audiobook which is read by David Tennant who played the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor.

The book definitely kept me turning pages anxiously but I'm still not sure my thoughts about the ending. The author didn't necessarily do what I wanted her to do but that is what makes a good book.
