I enjoyed this book very much. I didn't pick this book up just because "Nicholas Flamel is mentioned in Harry Potter" I knew about him before I read HP and have always been interested in Alchemy. Anyway, the book was pretty good. However, I was disappointed in the ending. I think the author should have left it as a cliff hanger (Even though I would have hated it) It would have left me dying for the second book but instead I was actually disappointed with the characters dicision at the end and was trying to decide whether or not to continue reading. Over all, the book is good for anyone who likes HP or anything like it. It's an easy read but not really my favorite.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It isn't a great work of literature, but it was thoroughly enjoyable for what it was- a well told mystery/adventure story. On the positive side, the author did a lot of research on the role of the village executioner, so descriptions of practices seemed very true to life. It is also fascinating that the author is a direct descendant of a long line of executioners whose real names are used in the book. On the down side, one thing that really threw me- and I don't know if was an issue with the author or the translator- but there were several current phrases and cliches that seemed out of place in 16th century Germany. For example- "What's up?" was used at least twice. If you can get past that, it is a an enjoyable read.
Montgomery grew up in Framingham around the same time I did...familiar places, and happenings...

I've never been so hesitant to read a book. I knew the premise and I really didn't think I'd be able to handle it, despite Cody's urging and promises that I'd love it. After many trusted people gave this book great reviews I decided to give it a try. So glad I did! Yes, it is about The Hunger Games where kids ages 12-18 have to fight to the death. Even so, it doesn't get too graphic or gory. I genuinely cared about the characters and can't wait to pick up the next book…sadly I have to refrain until we move, at least I'm going to try.

This was my Spring Break project. Just to give you an idea of what my "projects" often look like, my trip-to-San-Francisco project last August was Anna Karenina. Large in scope, lengthy of page. This was no exception, though I must say I found it much more enjoyable that Anna K. I had previously read The Razor's Edge and Christmas Holiday, so I knew basically the style I was in for. I found Of Human Bondage to be a good deal more readable than expected. It's enormous, and the print is small, but after the first few chapters, when Philip goes to Paris to study art, it picks up. The philosophy is fascinating, the characters distinct and well-drawn, though often completely unlikeable. I did find myself very proud of Philip at the end, when he realized what was really important in his life, but it took maybe fifty pages too long for him to figure it out. All in all, an excellent, thought-provoking and engaging read.
My favorite book of the series!
some of my favorite books come from the young adult section, this is a perfect example. Easy read, but beautiful story.
I loved this story. The story itself is engaging and the writing is absolutely exquisite. I would have given it five stars, but somewhere in the middle I started wondering what's the point (as I'm sure the hostages did as well!)

This has, so far, been my least favorite of the series. I found out who got iced at the end long before I read it; hence, the suspense was compromised. Aside from knowing spoilers, I still thought it lacked a lot of energy compared to its predecessors. There was too much exposure to secondary characters and many repetitive scenes. Most tiresome was the bickering between Ron and Hermione. The book did, however, redeem itself by generating a great deal of anticipation in its final chapter where Harry vows his intentions for the final book.
