I've been reading this since maybe March? That is to say it took me at least 3 months. Definitely interesting subject, just a little too dry for me--even as a chemist! The last chapter was perhaps my favorite, because my colleague and I had recently been discussing the periodic table (yes we do that) and she was trying to remember a group 13 element with "l"s in it that is poisonous. I was like...um...they're mostly poisonous! Turns out, your favorite and mine, thallium! I did think the chapter headings (chemical formulas) were cute, though I took issue with largely repetitive sections (methanol, than ethanol).

This book is awesome, it is the reason for all my sleepless nights lately. It says alot about a book when a teenager would rather read than sleep. I was sucked in, i couldn't imagine the way Charity meyers lived: no mother, self-absorbed father, a camera-happy stepmother, and caretakers that you don't really know. For some it might have been a nightmare to be taken, but for Charity it could have been the best thing that ever hapened to her. It changed her life and I{ think it was for the better. She met some people along the way and even though she may have already known them, she really got to know about them. I also really loved Dessi's character and i think his and Charity's interactions throughout the story brought this book the penut butter to its missing jelly.

Do not need to read book 4 comin spring 2012. The plot was confusing and dragged on too long. Luce and Daniel are together at the end of book 3, so good enough for me.
I thought this to be an extremely powerful book. It was a study of the quote that "absolute power corrupts absolutely." The novel, an historical fiction, follows the career of the dictator, Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic. He was a man of little morals and one so corrupt and demonic, that his ruling sent shivers down the spine of the reader. He entrenched himself as the political leader with the whip of executions and absolute rule. He was denounced by many including the United States and he Catholic Church, but refused categorically to step down. Focusing and weaving a tale within the historical framework, we learn of Trujillo's government and his family. They are all filled with the concepts of self and the leader is diabolical in his ability to read people. People plan his assassination in the hopes that the military would assume control and the country would be rid of "the goat" as he was nicknamed because of his sexual appetites. Llosa builds a compulsive story using a fictional family particularly in the figure of Urania Cabral and her famous father, who was a member of Trujillo's inner circle. Urania's return to the Dominican Republic after thirty years opens up the story and brings us into contact with the Dominican Republic of the late fifties and sixties. Urania has a powerful story to tell of her experiences with her father and the reason for her hatred of him as well as the dictator. Through sets of monologues and talks with her family, Urania relates the happenings of her county as well as the ones that touch her young life. Llosa sets up and maintains the trauma in the environment in which the people lived within this country of fear and retributions. The reader will be "blown away" by the portrayal of Trujillo, the Generalissimo, who while maniacal, holds himself to various obsessions, self discipline, obsessive cleanliness, punctuality, and of course sex. Long though this book is, Llosa presents a man, his family, his government, and his people with tight words and gruesome doings. It was an excellent novel of the workings os political intrigue headed by a monster.

The concept of writing a letter to your younger self at a critical point in your life is intriguing. Many of the letters were easily forgettable, but the handful of letters written by women brave enough to be vulnerable were very moving.

If you loved the musical... maybe you'll love the book. :) I read the book before I watched the musical and overall, I do think that the storyline for the musical is better. However, I felt that the book was written very well and is a great book for adults. It does have a few cuss words and explicit scenes so I'd recommend it for adults only.
