I would rate this book somewhere between mediocre and great. I know the range is a little broad, but that's the best I can do. I enjoyed the beginning of the novel, and getting to know both Silas and Bod. But several of the mini-adventures Bod has are ill introduced and confusing. For example, the time when bod was kidnapped by the goblins. I truly enjoyed the illustrations, I thought the pictures truly added to the story. This book would be a great resource for teaching unusual vocabulary. There were some words that I had to look up myself. I'm sure the story line and characters would be able to grasp some of my students' attention, but teaching it to a class would be a little far-fetched. However, this is a great book to have on my shelf for my students that are interested in this genre. I will say that I did have a far greater appreciation of this novel after listening to the author read it himself.

As a purely literary work, The Jungle suffers from notable problems: Sinclair’s prose is serviceable, if occasionally awkward, and the story is overtly propagandistic (not that Sinclair had a problem with that). These qualms, though, do not diminish the importance of the work. In The Jungle, Sinclair presents a scathing attack on capitalism through the story of Lithuanian immigrants in Chicago’s Packingtown. Famous for sparking Federal investigations, prompting the establishment of the Food and Drug Administration, and generally grossing out the American populace, a glance at modern news headlines attests to the continued relevance of The Jungle.

Did I enjoy it? Sure. Do I love it? The drama is made into so much hype that it took away the pleasure of reading it. Should I be put in 16th Century when Shakespeare wrote it, perhaps I could be all marveled and fascinated with the romance these two had. However, considering I am a pessimist in 21st Century, a shrug is all that I could muster.

a great book- read it several times
As I read this book during two sleep lab shifts, I felt my world expand and get more intense. This memoir describes ethnobotanist Jeremy Narby's experience living and studying with Ashananca people from the Peruvian Amazon. While there, he has psychedelic experiences that lead him to academic study of the ancient universality of the sometimes deeply-experienced twisted serpent. Depicted in world cultures as the source of information and life, Narby finds fascinating parallels between these myths and our current knowledge of biology and genetics.

Murder in a crime lab makes for an interesting twist. Speaking of twists, that's how my mind felt as I tried to keep up with the plethora of characters, their motives, their pasts, and their connections with one another. Still, I enjoyed, as usual, James' descriptive style [although her landscapes tend to stand more clearly than her people] and even the way she expresses the perspective of different characters during the course of the tale.
