Empowering book about how one man made a decision to try to fix a problem, and how this effort grew into a worldwide movement.

I just re-read this for the first time since high school and I remember liking it more 10 years ago, but I've become somewhat more cynical since then and books do not easily impress me these days. However it was still a delightful read, full of meaning and beauty. I especially appreciated the simplicity of Hesse's writing, something woefully lacking from modern works.

This is more of a fable than a book. Cute but simplistic.

When I received The Fearsome Beastie to read and review with my son, I read it through to myself first. The book is written in rhyme and reminded me of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson in its style, although it's definitely more dark and scary. I did feel at first that it might be a little too scary for a younger child and I did have some slight doubts about reading it to my ‘only just’ 5 year old son, R, but he’s quite a level headed child and so I gave it a go. The story is about how The Fearsome Beastie sneaks into the village at night looking for children to eat and tricking them, pretending he only wants to play. He then proceeds to eat the kids, but is caught by ‘Gran’ and made into Beastie Stew. I really shouldn’t have worried about R’s reaction. He loved the tension of the build-up in the plot and was horrified when the children got eaten, but this very quickly turned into hysterical laughter at the thought of beastie stew (apart from the floating eyeball – he thinks that is seriously gross!). He also wanted to know where all the blood was when the beastie was chopped in two! It has definitely been the cause of many a bedtime discussion. He adores rhyming books and was also very taken by the beautiful illustrations by Gabriele Antonini and so The Fearsome Beastie very quickly became one of his favourite bedtime stories. In the month or so we’ve had the book, I think I must’ve read it at least 15 times and although he can't read very well yet, he knows the words off by heart already and will say them along with me as I'm reading. I often find him hiding in bed with his torch and a pile of books ‘reading’ to himself and this is more often than not one of those books. I guess my idea of scary for a 5 year old and his idea of scary 'being' a five year old differ slightly. Mmm. If you’ve got younger children, I would definitely recommend this book. It’s scary fun (I doubt it would cause nightmares - R hasn't had any worries with it) and I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it too.

This book was very interesting and thought provoking. Matt Mikalatos has a very interesting view point and made me think about how I approach Jesus. Very funny and enjoyable as well.

Joseph is struggling to be a good kid in the face of really tough odds. He's had good people in his corner, but now his grandparents have died, his Dad's in Iraq, and his crackhead mother's behavior has become increasingly erratic. His mom has lost the house her father left over and spends all the child support and welfare money she gets on booze and drugs. Mother and son are now living in a homeless shelter. Joseph's concern for his mother and his loyalty to her are evidence of his sweet nature, but it is maddening to see him pass up opportunities to get out of his impossible home situation to live with the aunt who could give him a stable life. There is little plot or dramatic tension here; it's just Joseph getting along day to day.

Been a long time since I've read Clive Barker. Somewhat of an under appreciated author. And one month later, I'm finally done. What a horrible, horrible book. I don't know if Clive sucks or I just don't enjoy his genre these days. I read Mister B Gone about a year ago and I remember that sucked even worse. Guess I won't be reading any Barker for awhile. :(

What a book! Sharon Creech did it! This novel is an intriguing journey of a road trip and two stories that collide into each other. This could be "that book" for some students that hook them on reading as pre-teens. Sal and Phoebe, two of the main characters, are different from each other and most kids that would read this book, but both have qualities that make the reader want to know more about them. This is a great book for predictions and one of the most important pieces of the story is hard to pick up on, especially if you miss certain clues like (resting peacefully) at the beginning of the story. That is as much as I will say so I don't ruin the story. Just read it!
This was a delicious book from start to finish. It was another of those that, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I loved the well-written characters and their distinct voices. The plot was well thought out, and there were lighthearted moments that were priceless.
