This may be the most superficial programming book I've ever encountered. On one hand, the author does make sure readers can't possibly be intimidated by PHP. On the other, basics like functions and arrays are considered beyond the scope of the book and relegated to an appendix! At one point, classes come up unavoidably but are waved away with a "this will work--just trust me and don't worry about it." Meanwhile, there are four or five entire chapters on MySQL--apparently that's not outside the scope. Makes no sense to me. I got this as a free review copy back when I used to teach, and it's a perfect example of why I never picked books published by Thomson/Course Technology. They're always super babyish and lacking in substance. There is a quick reference in Appendix B that looks like it would be pretty handy, though, so yay for that. I often make myself a 2-page cheat sheet when picking up a new language--the quick reference will speed that up a good bit.

Classic Haven Kimmel. I laughed, I (almost) cried, it became a part of me. Maybe it's because she's only a few years younger than me and I can totally relate to her world view as a 13 year old in the seventies... I don't know. But she has a style of writing that is, at once, charming and familiar. Her books get under my skin and stay with me for a long time - and that's a good thing.

the fact remains that panem is a futuristic north america. north america is currently only 57% white, with that percentage decreasing. there is absolutely no reason to make a leap and believe that panem has more white people than we do now. if anything, looking at scientific population projections there would be less. suzanne collins did not need to spell this out for you in the book. it is common knowledge that north america does not equal the USA alone, and that it is the most racially diverse continent on earth, with all evidence pointing to it only growing in diversity. the hunger games films are racist and practice whitewashing because they are an adaptation of a book about a diverse nation of people overwhelmingly of color, featuring a prominently white cast. [ racebending ] p.s. mental casting of alisson stokke or seychelle gabriel as katniss

My favorite book ever. An elegant tale of good and evil. I have ultimate respect for Harper Lee for not writing another novel: nothing could top this. Good and evil separately are keenly played out in at least five of the characters, but it's the enigmatic Boo Radley who struggles with both and becomes the book's most memorable character. I bet you can't read it just once.

I enjoyed this book, as much as I have her others... I loved Iain because unlike a lot of the Lairds written in Historical Novels, he was gruff but he wasn't an outright ass to her... I liked the progression of their falling in love, I absolutely adored the friendship between Frances Catherine and Judith... Judith's impact on the Clan as a whole, particularly the woman, was the highest point of this story for me... I can't wait to read Ransom...
