Interesting … I almost quit reading this book around page 50; it didn’t think it was interesting or in-depth enough, but after I put it down, I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters and storyline. Therefore, I picked it up again and am so glad that I did! I finished it pretty quickly and discovered that it was actually a very well-thought-out, very well researched novel. This was really Bethia's story, and Caleb was an interesting character to base the conflicts of the times around. I felt the story was really about the challenges and difficulties faced in this place and period, primarily by the women and the Indian natives. The main characters made great strides toward equality, although they were really only tiny baby steps, and a lot of their progress was apparently wiped away with the Indian wars that came shortly after that time. The challenges they face are so similar to some of those we still face today: bigotry, lack of cultural awareness, limitations imposed by those who crave power, etc. Bethia is a strong character who works hard to maintain her individuality, yet also wants to fit into her society. The history, language, seemingly accurate references to the times (I have no way of knowing, but they certainly seemed realistic!) made the story fascinating. The end is both sad and happy, providing a sense of reality. I definitely recommend this book - - a good read, historically insightful and it provided a lot to think about.

I LOVED this book. Seriously, I am "book drunk" after reading it. I keep thinking about it and re-reading my favorite portions. I borrowed it from the library, but obviously will have to buy my own copy! It was a pure delight to read! What "Jane(Austen)Junkie" doesn't long to step back into time and find herself in Regency England? The concept of Austenland is just that-for the character, Charlotte, and the reader! I really felt like I was living vicariously through Charlotte! The original novel (Austenland) was a fun read, but I felt like this was even better b/c of the mystery aspect. The whole premise of women going to Pembrook Park and playing make believe gets even more complex when there is a mystery...only is it a make believe mystery or a REAL one? Such fun! I loved the Inner Thoughts of Charlotte and how her real life (shown through flash backs) played out in her stay at Pembrook and how she grew as an individual through her experiences in "Austenland." I liked that she was described as "nice." Not flashy, not eccentric, just nice and how she could still be delightfully interesting to read about. The book was laugh out loud funny-soo many witty lines! It was also very suspenseful and so well done that I was actually jumpy while reading it! I love that a book can have that effect! And the romance was charming-so nicely done! I highly recommend this book and am crossing my fingers that they will make a movie of it too! In a word, it was DELIGHTFUL!
