For a first novel this was a real surprise for me. A beautifully written narrative set in Bosnia and a story that brings home in so many ways the continuing conflict that plagues the Balkans.

This book is dazzling. I love the way it's structured. I wrote an annotation on it and really loved the exploration of themes. I think the prose is pitch perfect and the way he writes about life is sharp and accurate.

Before reading this book, I was not a Steve Harvey fan, but now I see him in a different light. The book has Mr. Harvey's infamous humour, and is filled with good practical advice which is really nothing more than using good common sense. However, if all women had good common sense when it comes to dating & relationships, then there would have been no need for Steve to write this book. The 90-day rule is nothing new. I have been using that title since the mid-90's, and it really is true that for the most part, you will learn everything you need to know about a person in 90 days. Are they reliable, are the financially and mentally stable, do they want kids, or if they have kids are they a good parent? I think the bottomline is that women have much more power in relationships than we are using. Great book. I highly recommend it.

The main character, Arturo Bandini, is an asshole, yet oddly sympathetic. There is much disturbing content but the writing is lyrical and precise. I plan to read the other Bandini books, even though I want to slap him.

Blundell does it again. A noirish novel set in 1950s New York city where a girl from Rhode Island can end up dancing at an exclusive lounge, but as the title suggests there are always strings attached. As with What I Saw and How I Lied (Blundell's prevous work and National Book Award Winner) my only problem with this novel is that even though it is a great read it isn't something I would have picked up as a teenager, its just too dark looking. Don't get me wrong its a great book built on layers that build up to an ending that took me by surprise.
Love dis jawn. Of Woman Born and this book are the types of things I'd like to write if I ever do decide to pursue academia.
