I enjoyed this book. It was a Friday free book for my Nook. It's well written. I had to look up several words. The characters were true to east Texas. The whodunit mystery kept me until the end. I would recommend this book.

Absolutely loved this book, which told the real-life story of several female migrant workers in China. Leslie Chang is able to use her skills as a journalist and her Chinese speaking ability to befriend several women who move from small villages in China to larger cities to work in factories. She investigates the work life, their rural life, dating, marriage potential, corruption and their struggle to learn English in this intriguing book. She also talks about her own family history and her struggle to reconcile that with the lives of the migrant women she is following.
Except that some mean person decided that they were a better artist than the author and RUINED it for me by drawing all over it! They were terrible by the way. Their drawings..

1980 surprised me in one way: the protagonist, Peter Hunter, is likable. He’s not perfect, but he’s the closest to be a good guy yet in the Red Riding Quartet. The novel begins when Hunter, a “clean” cop, is brought in from Manchester to review the Yorkshire Ripper case and offer a new perspective. He’s distrusted from the start, as he’s been brought to Yorkshire before to investigate police officers. Like everyone who’s come into contact with the murders in this series, he’s caught into the tangled web of Yorkshire police corruption, and his life crumbles around him. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Ripper still lurks in the shadows, preying upon women. 1980 clarifies a few plot points brought up in the previous novels, and shows how the past is misinterpreted, hidden, or covered up with seemingly malicious intent. Like the rest of the series, the novel’s filled of imagery of rot and decay, and full of racism, sexism, corruption, police brutality, and sexual violence towards women. The writing moves along at a furious pace, and passages and sentences are repeated, like echoes. I look forward to the final installment of this series—1983—and am interested to see how the quartet will be pulled together. (For example, maybe I’ll find out if Eddie Dunford from 1974 is actually dead.)

Riley Keep was once a missionary. After a horrible tragedy he turned to alcohol for help, abandoning his wife and daughter. He takes to the streets and befriends a man named Brice, also an alcoholic. Brice is in much worse shape than Riley, though. Riley hears there might be something that can help Brice, so he brings Brice to the small town of Dublin, Maine. There Riley finds a cure for alcoholism, but it could be costly. And Riley will have to confront the secrets of his past. The writing could have used some extra editing in places. Overall, though, this is an uplifting, hope-filled story by an award winning author. It's somewhat leisurely paced with a character driven plot. Well worth the time spent reading this novel.
A fitting finale to the Ender trilogy. On the planet Lusitania, Ender and co struggle to keep ahead of a deadly virus that seems intent on destroying everything in touches. On the planet Path, a brilliant servant girl works with her Master to find meaning to their existence. A curious mixture of humans, aliens, genetically modified humans and a computer work furiously to save the planet Lusitania, free the people on Path and stop the Starways Congress from making a huge mistake. Card uses the book to air his ideas on humanity and society, but that notwithstanding the book keeps you engrossed.
