I read this book in Japan, because it was lying around, and it was in English. I finished it though. Does that mean something?

This series has gotten too predictable for me. There was really nothing that happened in this book that makes me want to rush to read the next book, which is the last book in this series. I will read the last book but only to finish the Cedar Cove books. I think my review of this book says more of how I have growen as a reader and say less about this authors ability to entertain.

A generous 3 starts because I enjoyed reading the second one so much and this one provided the background.
Well written and a good story and all of that, I'm just not that into fantasy.
** spoiler alert ** The focus of this book is definitely the setting, and what lingers most in my mind after reading this story is Hundreds, the decaying estate of the Ayres' family, and the grim atmosphere generated by its decline among the surviving residents. The story is narrated by Dr. Faraday, a country doctor of humble origin, who relates the odd happenings of the house and describes his growing entanglement into the lives of Mrs. Ayres, Roddy and Caroline. At first, Faraday seems a likable fellow, but his growing obsession with marrying Caroline and living at Hundreds becomes repugnant, and I suspect that he may have had a hand in Caroline's untimely end.

Good old fashioned British classic. Thomas Hardy loved overly-wrought descriptive narratives. Intriguing love quadrangle. Wondered if Margaret Mitchell used this as inspiration for Gone With the Wind -- many similarities between Bathsheba and Scarlet. Not an easy read...but worth it.
