Although the Grapes of Wrath is rated by most as being the best Steinbeck I think East of Eden is vastly superior mainly because it dwells on human beings with all their failings and is not set in as specific a setting as the great depression but is a more general saga. Probably my favourite book so I am rather biased in writing this review. What makes this book rather special is that in essence Steinbeck tells the same story twice and yet you never feel that he is boring or repetitive. The characters in the book are extremely well etched and I just find that for every character in the book there seems to be someone who I have met in real life. It is tempting to actually try and spend more time on some of the characters but that would mean a really long issue. Suffice to say that my favourite character is Lee the chinese man friday of Adam Trask. The plot is a reworking of Cain and Abel and centres around the idea of good versus evil. Steinbeck's understanding of the theme is quite spectacular and never once does he sound preachy or biased, which is quite an achievement. As with every Steinbeck the description of nature is damn good and the climax is quite good.

Ah, Tom Robbins. I have trouble picking a favorite by him, but I'm going to settle on this one. It's awesome.

I'd recommend this book to anyone starting out on the writing journey, as well as those already on the path. Very accessible, balanced advice that I appreciated and took to heart.

Absolutely odd and fascinating at the same time. Maybe it would have helped if I would have read #1 first. It was very annoying to have words or phrases described through the book. Was glad to finish.
A favorite from when I was younger. Oldschool, woodsy fantasy.
"But I've found that while a spontaneous personality may cause me to adopt a more flexible schedule, ***spontaneity isn't an excuse for me to ignore the importance of discipine.*** And discipline is important for my spiritual life. In fact, it is the path by which the good news of Christ gives meaningful shape to all the days of my life. Maybe discipline seems like a hard word to you now -- one full of challenge and perhaps of duty. But be prepared to discover that discipline is your lifeline, something that you learn to embrace and thank God for as you grow in him" (12, emphasis mine).

This is a forensic science thriller, and was a lot of fun, if you like that sort of thing. It was a quick read (I read it in one night), a little gory, but entertaining.
