I picked this up from the sale rack yesterday, remembering the name from all the hype surrounding it awhile back. It was certainly original, starting out after the narrator has died. I found it extremely well-written and hard to put down. I started it last night, reading the first few chapters, and then finished it today. Sebold's plot was incredibly bold, with her menagerie of characters. I thought she handled the subject matter and the plethora of actors in her story extremely well. After reading reviews at Amazon, I noticed that most people had issues with the ending of the book because it seemed out of place. For me, it didn't. I felt that the book ended where it should have - closure for both Susie, the murdered girl, and her family and friends, allowing them all to move on with their lives (or afterlife, in Susie's case).

This is a great book if you love reading about Cleopatra and that entire culture. There are times that I feel bogged down by some of the information and have to reread paragraphs. But overall, an interesting look into Cleopatra's life, loves and politics.

I did enjoy this book, it's certainly been one of the best Pratchett books I've read. It really felt as though the storyline was solid and hung together well. Better than some of the others I've read. Although there have been some great ones. Small Gods was very good as well. Death is such a fun character, if that's really a good way to describe it at all! You can see Pratchett's had real enjoyment writing this. I love the dry outlook and the way he speaks in capital letters, and is always grinning because there's nothing else he can do. Ha ha, and then when Death goes to get another job.... anyway, won't write too much about that here. 2009 bookcrossing journal.
