This was fascinating but so hard to read. Bartoletti very calmly and fairly explains the social issues, politics, and background that allowed the KKK to come into being and grow into a huge, horrible, out of control, vicious, (I really can't think of an awful enough adjective to insert here) terrorist group. It was hard to read because these men (and women) never came to justice, never felt bad--indeed felt completely justified in terrorizing, beating, and killing any black person simply because of their race, and any white person who didn't agree with their bigotry. The Klan was entrenched into every level of society and supported by law enforcement, the courts, and the government. Even President Johnson, who came into office after Pres. Lincoln was assassinated, was instrumental in supporting the atrocities committed. Holy cow! I am still angry as I type this! The way I was able to get through this book was thinking of the huge wake-up call each one of these ignorant bigots had when they died and of their suffering when they realized what they had done.

This is really a footnote exploring in occasionally breathless and tabloid style, the many alleged affairs of both partners in an unusual marriage. The tone of the book is curious, because I gained the impression that the author was a big supporter of the Roosevelts, and that she wanted to pass judgment on them for the various affairs, but that her admiration inhibited her from doing so. Part of the problem is that the real evidence of the affairs has been turned over so much that the truth is hard to glean from the many stories. There appears to have been plenty of opportunities for the affairs, and certainly before the polio attack appear to have been true. The medical evidence as to Franklin's potency after this is equivocal, but not discussed in any serious way. We are just left with the evidence of opportunity but no actual sex. As fro Eleanor, she is again alleged to have had both lesbian and hetero affairs. There are quotes from passionate letters, and again evidence of opportunities, but I believe the author forgets that Eleanor was a person of her time and although a free thinker, was ultimately a child of her elite upper class background, which may have meant there was much smoke but no fire in the relationships. I think a better focus, explored by others, is the way in which a bright intelligent woman was stifled by the class ridden and sexist attitudes of her times.

La opción que tomó Thomas Pynchon al darse a conocer al mundo en 1963 con ‘V.’ es la opuesta: la hipernovela a través de la novela enciclopédica. Si Calvino reconstruye todas las formas posibles a base de montar y desmontar piezas, Pynchon nos las entrega en bloque. Un inventario total de mundos, lenguajes, expresiones, peripecias y símbolos. Si trazáramos el signo que da título a la novela sentaríamos a Calvino y Pynchon en los vértices opuestos, y a la ‘Rayuela‘ de Cortázar en el punto en el que las líneas oblicuas convergen. ¿Qué es V.? Para Herbert Stencil es la búsqueda que da sentido a su existencia. Huérfano, sólo cuenta con los diarios legados por su padre Stanley, un diplomático/espía del Foreign Office inglés, y sus referencias a lo largo de la última etapa colonial hasta la posguerra mundial de encuentros con una enigmática “V”. Que ha sido tanto una muchacha como una mujer madura, un país desconocido del África central como una rata especialmente perspicaz del Metro de Nueva York, que sedujo al cura que bajó a evangelizarlas. Para Bernie Profane, marinero pseudo-desertor, la búsqueda de V no significa nada. Se considera un schlemihl, un desgraciado por naturaleza contra el que conspiran los objetos inanimados. De ahí que no pueda fijarse en ningún sitio y su mecánica sea la del movimiento de yo-yo, condenado a huir y regresar perpetuamente al punto de partida. Las trayectorias de Stencil y Profane terminan confluyendo, una por voluntad y la otra por atracción gravitacional, en la isla de Malta: el último lugar en el que se tuvo noticia de V. El primer movimiento lo realiza Profane, al abandonar la base naval en la que está estacionado cuando la mujer que tira del hilo de su yo-yo, Rachel, le reclama en Nueva York. Ahí pasará por diversas ocupaciones (la más llamativa, la de cazador de caimanes de las alcantarillas) y se introducirá en la pandilla de la “Dotación Enferma” en el que participan Rachel y Stencil. Una sátira mordaz e hilarante contra la bohemia burguesa de los años cincuenta, que se emborracha citando a Sartre, pero que también atestigua el arte urbano que surge en esos años en forma de jazz y ritmos callejeros. Stencil, en cambio, no participa del realismo estilizado neoyorquino. Es un personaje que se refiere a sí mismo en tercera persona para impedirse adoptar una personalidad cerrada. Herbert no lee los diarios de Stanley, los interioriza y los habita. En el Cairo de finales del siglo XIX se transforma en ocho narradores distintos para contar la misma historia; pasa a ser unos ladrones de cuadros en Florencia, un ingeniero en la colonia sudafricana alemana, un dramaturgo parisino, el poeta maltés que vio por última vez a V. Thomas Pynchon según Los Simpsons Thomas Pynchon según Los Simpsons Sería un trabajo espurio tratar de sintetizar la densidad conceptual de la novela. Esta simplemente rebosa, desborda sus límites, se multiplica en formas imprevisibles. Cada narración de Stencil es un segmento completamente hermético, con su propia lengua, sus precisas y doctas referencias históricas, y un universo semántico único. El vasto repertorio de lenguaje es lo que permite la mutabilidad de su obra: vale tanto para las rudas batallitas de marinería como para plasmar la angustia sentimental en los diarios de un poeta. Esta es una obra inmensa, y por lo tanto desconcertante. Los cambios de ritmo son abruptos. Si las desventuras de Profane y el resto de la Dotación Enferma se leen de forma amena, algunos segmentos históricos son especialmente densos. Pero la calidad y la riqueza conceptual de la prosa de Pynchon no decaen nunca, lo cual convierte a V. en una novela excelente con la que obsesionarse. We love the movie based on this book, featuring Neil Patrick Harris. However, the book itself isn't exceptional, but is still a feel good read at Christmas.
