I really thought I would love this, but not at all. In between all of the utter despair, heartbreak, & horror was a lot of boring, coma-inducing repetition. Reading this aloud to my husband, I had to use different voices to distinguish between father & son because of the sentence echoing & hundreds of "okay." "okay." conversations. I'm not against using voices (I do love me a good Cockney accent), it just was not interesting enough. I realize they were on a journey and it's very realistic in that respect: walk, camp, wake up, walk, eat, "okay", camp. It doesn't make for good reading though. Oh, and I thought early on McCarthy was making up a bunch of words. I guess it would help to have a degree in theology or something. I did like the ending though and not just because I could move on.

I am a huge fan of this column and learn something nearly every week from it. It has great advice from leaders in a variety of industries on what they look for in hiring and performance - and key traits that effective ones possess. It's curation of CEO knowledge over the past decade. It has some surprises and good lessons for anyone. I look forward to applying these questions when I make my next hire.

A great story about two little girls growing up together. Hard to get into in the beginning but worth the work.
Helpful for my work, but not a book I would recommend in general.

Not a heavy read at all. Sort of like a couple of people breezily discussing complaints. But the point of view they suggest is really common sense. Embrace complaints. Listen to what people tell you. They are suggesting to your business how you can improve. Most people will simply go elsewhere and say nothing. It really crystallized my thinking that businesses should listen to complaints. You don't have to read the whole book, but the first two chapters were very very helpful for me!
really good book that kept me entertained until i got done with it. Great if you're a mystery fan

I loved this book because it is a comical true story about a guy and his lofty ambitions of having an amazing garden. He tries EVERYTHING! He gets excited and frustrated and reaps a few rewards...he definitely learns a lot. He does drop the F-bomb in his frustration, just once, but still bugged.
Since I would find it difficult to review this thoroughly (due to the fact that I would probably end up spoiling the entire plot), here's my opinion in a few sentences/points: (1) It's very ambitious. It doesn't even feel like that much of a novel. To borrow a fanfiction term, it seems like the novel is set up in an "alternate universe". (2) It's quite...trippy, for the lack of a better word. There's too much alternation among the point of views, which I think could make the reader love or hate the novel. (3) The synopsis is a bit misleading, I must say. (4) The ending is a twist ending, I think.
What I learned from this book? Everything. And its entertaining. Want to know how to make a stamp, wrestle an alligator, fold your clothes, survive a fire, make love, you name it - it's in here and cleverly illustrated. Good bathroom reading material.
