I read this for my American Ethnic Literature class. I would never have picked up this book on my own, but I enjoyed it. I found the mix of realistic and fantasy elements interesting.

Sounds like a children's story but content is adults only. Really entertaining.

One of the few books I've enjoyed reading in school. Especially good for people from Boston to read.
No, this is not about Hurricane Ike going through Texas. This is a story, based on fact, of a family growing up in Franklin County, Virginia. This county was the seat for White Mule, Firewater, Wild Cat, Stump Whiskey, Rotgut, White Lightning, Moonshine, or whatever you wanted to call it. It is claimed that 99 of 100 people in Franklin County were making, or had some connection with illegal liquor. The Bondurant family played a major role in not only making moonshine, but also were key players in its distribution. Three brothers, Forrest, Howard, and Jack, are the main focus of the story. Forrest , the oldest, became a legend when his throat was sliced from ear to ear but able to walk several miles to a hospital for aid. The book gives insight into the lives of the people that lived a very meager life that was largely dependent on the illicit liquor trade. There was little, if any, law enforcement and beatings ands killings were considered a way of life. The status quo of these people changes when law enforcement decides that they want a piece of the action and start impopsing tariffs for the production and transportation of the moonshine. The Bondurant brothers refused to pay the tariff, leading to armed conflict. This leads to a major conspiracy trial and its violent ending. The book gives a good account of the people of this area and the time. However, in the telling of their lives, it takes a long time to really get into the real meat of the story. Many readers, I am afraid, will put this book down long before they are half way through it.
One of the most magical and entertaining books I have EVER read, I highly recomend it.
Some of my favorites were the Red Plate (used to celebrate all those little things) and the Bravery Cup (for trying something new). Popcorn for breakfast instead of a corn cereal. Surprise mini-trips.
Will review later. But this was sooooooo swoony. I LOVED it. Jumpy Claps
