The biggest draw in this story, for me, was to get to the end and learn if the author really was able to accomplish his mission. However, it turns out that the journey was pretty interesting, in itself. I'm sure there's a moral there somewhere -- something along the lines of "the destination not being as important as the journey". Nonetheless -- I enjoyed reading about all of the unbranded, "Mom and Pop" hotels they stayed in and restaurants they ate in. It's nice know that quirky spots like that still exist in the US. I also enjoyed reading about the many acts of kindness the author was shown by the people he came across in his journey. It kind of makes me happy to know that we Americans aren't as bad as foreigners make us out to be :P The one thing that did annoy me was how much they obsessed over gas, and finding an unbranded gas station. It was actually the most vital, yet most difficult, part of their journey -- so it seems pretty stupid to me that they picked a car made in 1970 that only gets 15 miles to the gallon to make a 3,000 mile cross-country journey. Every time they had car trouble, or were on the verge of running out of gas, I was thinking "well, DUH!". So, whereas the journey might have been more "fun" for them in that kind of a car, in my opinion, it definitely added unnecessary cost and stress. Overall, though, this book was fun to read, and I enjoyed learning about places in my own country that I've never visited, and reading about places that I have already visited.

If you like 'the alchemist', it's no wonder this will tap your interest as well. I always thought of marking my favorite lines in the alchemist, but then this book did it for me. It is a collection of adages which was briliantly organized and more were added which can be a guide for the journey of the 'warrior of the light' in each of us. A great companion for 'the alchemist'.

Anne Lamott is incredible, she really is, and the only reason that I'm only giving this book three stars is that I'm not typically taken with shizzle that takes place in the real world. In Blue Shoe, people meet, talk, fight, fuck, live, love, hate, and do all those other fun and happy things that people are known to do. Wonderful writing, excellent humor, and very understandable characters that I sympathized with from time to time. An excellent book; just not my type.

Oh, man, was this good. Talk about movie in the making. (Don't you worry Brad Pitt, I'll still go see your zombie movie when you finish.) Have to say, it's your typical zombie story...zombie virus hits the Earth, mostly everyone dies, small groups of survivors try to, uh, survive. Anyway...isn't that what makes 'em so fun? The action pretty much doesn't stop. The last sentence of the book was awesome. (Don't look!! You'll regret it. I accidentally did. Doh!) Totally leaves it open for a #2, which would be a-ok with me, but I would also like the book the way it ended without a second, so we'll see what the author does with it.

This version of the "Three Little Pigs" features tamales as the targets for Senor Lobo, the big bad wolf. What I liked about this story was the prose, Kimmel's writing. I read it aloud, and it just flowed. The repetitious rhyming verses that Senor Lobo says as he approaches each tamale's house, and the tamale's replies, bounce the story along. I must try this with my pre-schoolers, as some of them this year are Hispanic. I find it interesting that the smartest tamale was female and wore glasses. A bit of sexist bias? I loved the story, and can't wait to try it in story time.

And can it be that I should gain? Outrageous! Capon is spot on - and a fine, scandalously captivating writer.
