I like how this book is broken down into several points of view, you have Abileen, Skeeter and Minny. Minny and Abilieen are black maids and Skeeter is a white girl fresh out of Ole Miss. I also like how the author shows what life was like back then but with no sugar coating or in-your-face racism is wrong. She writes very subtly and just enough to get you thinking and empathizing. Very well done and a great read.

Sama ideja-koncept je sjajan kao i naravno psiholoski delovi u knjizi. Tri zvezdice su isključivo zbog stila pisanja, tj. nedostatka istog što je i razumljivo, s obzirom na činjenicu da je reč o psihoterapeutu a ne piscu. Ono što je neosporno jeste da njegove knjige daju novu perspektivu i ostaju zapamćene, barem se ja sećam određenih detalja iz svih do sada pročitanih knjiga. Sve u svemu, vredno čitanja.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I liked the protagonist, 11 year old, Delphine, and her sisters, Vonetta and Fern very much. The time and place - Oakland 1968 intrigued me, too, but I had a hard time getting past the whole situation - 3 little girls sent all the way across the continent by themselves to spend the summer with a mother who left them when the youngest was still a nursling, and who in no way wants to see them now. Was life really that much different then than it is now? Would the father and grandmother really send them off alone with no warning, no preparation, no back-up plan - and then not check up on them for the whole summer? Hard to believe - if the reader is also to believe that this family (aside from the absent mother, of course) is a close and loving one. Belief is harder still considering the political and racial climate of the times, and the fact that the story takes place in Oakland - which was then a literal hotbed. All that aside, it's an interesting look into the Black Panthers' ways of politicizing the youngest recruits and, peripherally, the dangers to which they were exposed, as well as the loving relationship between sisters. I'm not entirely sure what the author's goal is here since I don't know that the target audience would even pick up on the dangers these children were skirting, or even understand what was really going on. If her aim was to tell a readable story about sisters - then she nailed it. Otherwise, maybe not so much. It should be noted though: someone who lived through those times is not the author's target audience.

This was a fun book to read...I learned a lot about the fashion industry too. I enjoyed the evil boss...just when you think she couldn't get any worse, she does. Also, a good book for a young person entering the world of work for the first time.

I loved this one. LOVED it. First of all, I read this myself rather than listening to the audiobook. It took me hours rather than days, since I could move along at my own pace. Also, Mia is less whiny in my head! By far, though, the ending was the best part! I actually teared up from happiness. Lovvvvvvvvvve, love love. Also, Mr. Gianini is fantastic. :) It definitely makes me want to keep going with this series, but I will most assuredly be reading the books instead of listening to the audiobooks!

Interesting enough read, a little rude in places but this book explores more than her life as a call girl. It explores what made her start the oldest profession in the world, the experiences to be had ( good and bad) , her life as a teacher and how she got out of it.

I wanted to like it because I love alternate realities that facilitate alternate histories and new outcomes but this was too confusing to really flow. I wish the crispness of the art – clearly inspired by anime – was reflected in the storyline. I loved the art but I didn’t even recognize the characterization of Psylocke.
