"From Abu Ghraib to Guantanamo Bay, sexual torture has played a notorious role in the recent history of American interventions into the Arab world. These abhorrent techniques have been justified as an effective tool for interrogating Arabs, who are perceived as repressed and especially susceptible to sexual coercion--the result of centuries of racist assumptions about Arab sexuality." Damn, this looks like an amazing book. Super academic, though. Not sure I've got the discipline to get through it.

Four friends and their life together in college as sorority sisters who come together again later in life after a bit of an estrangement. I thought this was so well-written with great characters, emotion and understanding of human nature. I really liked how it ended and felt resolved myself with all the issues that were the theme throughout the story.
I really wanted to like this one more than I did. Cooper is a UNC journalism school graduate and has extensive reporting experience, so I was really, really surprised by how she wrote this story of growing up in Liberia. The dialogue is great and feels authentic--that was my favorite part. But the author's recounting of herself as a self-obsessed, entitled, clueless young girl in the middle of a roiling storm of class conflict and political unrest felt really offputting to me. I don't doubt that a young, incredibly wealthy young girl in the upper class of Liberia would have felt and behaved the way she did, but I cringed every page because she was so out of touch. Also surprised at how disjointed the story felt. Often the short snippets seemed to be charming to Cooper but didn't really tie together to help the story progress. I understand that with a childhood memoir, it's tricky to integrate personal memories with political events. As a child you aren't completely tuned into the events around you, even as they're shaping your life in dramatic ways. But between Cooper and her editors, they could have worked it out better than this.
This story is about an old man and his cat. It was very cute and shows how everyone needs a companion. Intended for younger audiences. I would use it for K-2.

Story of a young woman during the revolution in Iran in the 1960s--her family, her schooling, her friends, her opportunities. Beautiful language. This was a One Book, One San Diego selection. A good choice.

Probably the best book I've read about being a teenage male outside of Catcher in the Rye. That's the only way I'll compare the two though. This one is much sadder and more melancholic, but not in a bad way. It has the right sense of nostalgic distance and honesty to keep it from getting overwhelming sappy like it could have.
