Written originally in 1978 after fighting depression and alcoholism after the death of his wife this book takes a very dark view of magic. Whereas The Conjure Wife could take place in any college town, Our Lady of Darkness is set specifically in San Francisco. The novel supposes that modern magic, specifically black magic is tied to the building of large cities. San Francisco with its hills, history of earthquakes and of course the Transamerica pyramid is a 20th century necropolis. Take then a skeptic who finds a copy of Megapolisomancy: A New Science of Cities and his undying curiosity. Add in his friends who egg him on, some believing and some not and soon the protagonist is in the middle of a supernatural mystery involving a curse and a long forgotten building. What is 607 Rhodes? While I preferred the quirky charm of The Conjure Wife more than the dark mystery set in San Francisco I still enjoyed the story. I like horror stories that center around old architecture, especially old cities. I figured out the solution to the story much sooner than the protagonist did and the story felt like inspiration for a Charmed episode (or perhaps the entire series) but it was still a fun read and a good compliment to The Conjure Wife.

I know Carol Lynne works, and I buy the book. Carol Lynne is young, and her works is not always a constant. But she writes about characters who are deeply in love and put their relationship before all. Lex is a 44 years old ranch owner wit a 25 years old son. One summer, Sam, his son, brings home his college roommate, Nick. Nick is 26 years old and he is a foster son. He has no family and when he has the chance to live in a real family, he knows he wants to stay there forever. But Lex is not out with his son, and Nick can't live in a lie and so he left. But love is strong and three years later both Lex and Nick have to admit that their feelings are still strong and that they have to find a way to live together. The story is simple, and a little "all american dream": Lex is a Native American stud with a wealthy ranch who can buy all he wants to Nick. Nick is young but mature, very serious. He is not in search of Lex's richness, he really love his 19 years older lover. Lex's ex wife is a bitch, no one can like, neither her own son, Sam. As always in Lynne's books, sex is very down and dirty, loud and rough. It's a strange pair, ultra romantic characters with dirty sex... strange but interesting. Thought the parts about the main neanderthal, Punter, were entertaining and provided an interesting criticism of society. The storyline with Adikor, his partner/scientist was uninteresting and boring. Coming back to the rape detracted from the story. It made me feel guilty for being a human. Two more books to go. The author seems to change up his writing style. Also, I skipped the chapter preface. I just didn't care.

I would say this book is best as a quick guide to look up information on CSS coding standards. It's not best for actually teaching you to code, but good for those of us that just need to brush up on CSS.

I will think about my own problems in an effort to catch readers up!) and anachronistic attitudes. It was all the more pointed because I started it just after I finished A Spy in the House. A hot mess! What started out promising went waaaay downhill as stupidity spread. I give this one star because I was hooked for the first 100 pages. This is what I didn't like: 1. Unnecessary subplots. Sara? Trey? Divorce? Chan? 2. Kylie's obsession with pressing her breasts on EVERYONE. 3. The stupid character names. Sky whatever-her ridiculous last name was, & Holiday 4. The 3, yes, 3 (!) love interests, neither of which were interesting. 5. Silly secrets & mysteries ALL UNRESOLVED. Who put the tiger in Kylie's room and why?Lucas went where, with Fredericka ( another dumb name)? His letter left unread? Oh yeah, and exactly what is Kylie? Even she never found out. 6. Coincidences. Crazy ones. Wild animal park next to a few camps? Sure. A fairy who conveniently can communicate with animals? Why not? An investigator/FBI type who replaces one counselor after her exit. Sure, lawmen can decide to demote themselves to babysitters in the woods for the hell of it. I certainly won't continue with this boring series. Another low point is the confusing prose. I had trouble trying to figure out who was speaking/ what was happening.A real letdown. I think I'll give Hex Hall a shot, it couldn't be any worse than this.

"The Surrender of Breda," a midcareer masterpiece by Diego Velázquez (1599-1660), depicts a rare, graceful moment of Spanish triumph during the Eighty Years' War, which pitted imperial Spain against the fledgling Dutch Republic. After capturing the city of Breda in 1625, the commander of the Spanish forces, Ambrogio Spinola, declined to humiliate the Dutch under Justin of Nassau, saying he considered it "a point of wisdom to be merciful rather than severe." Velázquez shows Spinola placing a consoling hand on Justin's shoulder as the Dutchman turns over the key to the city—two military men meeting in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Spinola's behavior at Breda was not altogether characteristic of Spain's conduct during the war, which tended to be quite brutal, particularly toward Dutch Protestants, who faced torture and execution. Thus some have seen Velázquez's "Breda" as little more than brilliant propaganda, portraying a fleeting instance of Spanish munificence. But others have perceived a poignant piece of wish-fulfillment, evidence of Spain's desire for an honorable outcome to a largely futile war. As it turned out, Breda reverted to Dutch control just two years after Velázquez completed his picture, and the Spanish crown relinquished its territorial claims to the Dutch Republic in 1648, a testament to Spain's decline as a great power. In "Velázquez and the Surrender of Breda," Anthony Bailey chronicles Velázquez's life and career in the light of Spain's political and social history, using the siege of Breda as the fulcrum of the story.
