I am convinced that it is inevitable that machines will gain sentience at some point and life as we know it will end. this is a good story about one way the Singularity might play out. I didn't have high expectations for this book but I was surprisingly pleased. It was worth my time and a nice escape for the holiday. Disclaimer: Book contains extreme violence.

Meh. The book was lightyears better than the movie, and that's not saying much. Seriously.
Just began.

Evil snake demons have a plan to take over the world of 1700's France that involved possessing various poets. The only one that can stop them is the young Chevalier d'Eon, who is a master detective, agent for the King and when possessed by the spirit of his dead sister, he puts on a dress, wig and magic sword. What's in the drinking water in Japan? I love historical fantasy and this one has a nice blend of history and monsters and magic, but the art is too dark and over done and the artist seems too busy showing us all the blood and shadows that the storytelling seems to take second place. Enough interesting stuff here that I'll try volume two, but it'll take a great story to overcome some weak art.

Ellroy's memoir is paean to the grotesqueries of his life and thoughts. As such the book is so unavailingly honest that I couldn't look away.

My sixth graders love this story of Cole, a boy with oppositional-defiance issues, who severely injures a high school classmate. As his sentence, Cole chooses to experience Native American Tribal Justice instead of a traditional juvenile justice program, which essentially means he must survive on an island off the coast of Pacific Northwest for a year on his own. This survival fiction story has enough realistic fiction elements to keep even those who do not typically like survival fiction sitting on the edge of their seats.

I'll give this one a 2.5. There were just too many references to cuddling with lizards and kissing reptiles on the lips for me to give it 3 stars--I spent most of the time reading it with my upper lip curled and my nose wrinkled. I did like the scenes where Grace tries to figure out how to cope with puberty and the changes it's causing in her body, things I think most people can relate to.

The story of John Harrison's life and the blatant biased nature of science at that time is interesting, but I don't think this book is particularly well-written or gripping. Since it was short I made it through and still could enjoy it.
1948 Caldecott Medal Winner I think this one is also water color, but it's very dark. Lots of gray and primary colors. The style is abstract, of which I guess I'm not really a fan. The people look odd--their bright red skin makes them look horribly sun-burned. Some of the language rhymes nicely and there is some good imagery, but the story in itself isn't all that interesting. A town prepares for snow, then enjoys it (some of them, anyway), and finally it melts. Yay. I had to laugh, though, when "the postman put on his rubbers" (boots). Haha. I'm so immature.

I would've liked it more if it concentrated on the making of What's Going On more and what was going on with Berry Gordy less. But if you're obsessed with Marvin it's worth the short time it takes to read.
