This sequel to Tomorrow, When the War Began goes more heavily into the characters' relationships with each other, and although there are still plenty of "action" scenes it also has a lot of quiet time while the group is hiding out between missions. Even though it feels like the series could slip at any moment into a holding pattern of mission-hideout-mission-hideout, The Dead of Night manages to keep up a good pace and suck you into the adventures. What action happens gets more dramatic, and the characters get more philosophical about the situation they're in and what exactly it means to kill someone in hot blood vs. in cold blood as one by one they're forced into situations where it's kill or be killed and they find other people's blood on their hands. Definitely worth reading if you read the first book in the series; if you haven't read it and you like YA at all, definitely check out Tomorrow, When the War Began. And as soon as you finish that one, move on to this one.

Fabulous book about the Halocaust. I liked it because it wasn't too graphic or scary, as most books about the subject are. I hope I get to teach my future students this book someday.

reading now, loving every page
Can a book be smart, slight and pretentious, all at the same time? This one is. Kind of French, you say. Well, there's that, the kind of intellectual plate spinning that makes France the #1 market for philosophers gives birth to a slight tale of a concierge and a school girl in an upscale apartment bldg in Paris, both trying to hide their intellectual interests, both in search of love. I gained a bit of interest when the "plot" began to chug along a bit, but much of this is little more than clever wordplay of the type one might provide on a personal blog. Maybe that's the point?
