A quick read that a different approach from his others books; instead of sarcastic smartass super solider you find likable you have sarcastic smartass emotional teenage girl/icon for a whole race that is likeable half the time and moody the rest. The book brushes up some points that were vague in the Last Colony and also expands on others. All-in-all a must read if your a fan on the Old Man's war series.

A good book to have with you when you find yourself hanging around the hospital. As always, horses play a part and the other part this time was weather, its reporting and the problems it can create when it goes badly. Francis was, as in some other of his books, part time in Florida, in case you were sick of Newmarket in England. I never tire of this series and I always learn something.

"And you think you had a dysfunctional upbringing? HA!" is what I remember thinking immediately upon finishing this book. "The Glass Castle" shattered several illusions about assumption, upbringing and the role of hardship in one's character formation. It made me grateful for the ease of certain aspects of my life and appreciative of the challenge and hard work involved in moving past the more painful pieces. "Hard knocks build strong spines" is the way I now see it.

Hummmm. Vayamos por partes. No sabía que estaba basado en un personaje real. creía que era un personaje inventado situado en unos hechos muy documentados y muy detallados. Así que llegar al final y darme cuenta que sí existió y que se le escribió desde un diario cuyo contenido desconozco, me ha dejado por una parte maravillada de la maestría del autor y por otra desconcertada. Vargas Llosa controla los tiempos de varias manera, te sitúa casi al final de la acción y va hacia atrás de más de una forma con una soltura y una narración estupenda. Peeeeero hay tantas citas, tantas explicaciones de personajes, tantas descripciones, tantas fechas, nombres y apellidos que se hace pesado Lo que menos me gustó y más me desconcierta es escribir una novela de alguien real, sabiendo los hechos ¿pero los pensamientos? ¿Son esos pensamientos del protagonistas obtenidos a través de la lectura de los diarios o son del autor? Ni idea. Asi que no la recomendaría nunca a nadie que no quisiera estudiar ese personaje en esa situación concreta.

Besides giving this book 5 stars (which means it was amazing), I can't help but quote Elizabeth Gilbert. She is the author of Eat, Pray, Love, and said "I can't remember the last time I discovered a novel as smart and delightful as this one, a world so vivid that I kept forgetting this was a work of fiction populated with characters so utterly wonderful that I kept forgetting they weren't my actual friends and neighbors. Treat yourself to this book, please--I can't recommend it highly enough."

What a beautiful short story by Laurie Hunsaker! It’s strange to say that I knew Laurie “The Highland Hussy” here on goodreads before she became a published author. I even ordered a copy of her book, Highland Destiny , all the way from Australia, not just to support her writing endeavours, but because I was truly curious to read something penned by such a lovely and fun person. I haven’t as yet read Highland Destiny , but I have now read this short story, Amethyst Heat , and I was so pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed it! I’m not one who enjoys being critical, as anyone who has read my reviews would know - doesn't mean I'm not honest, though - so, I was truly hoping (shivering in my knickers) that I really would appreciate Laurie’s writing. I need not have worried, because if her novel is anything like this short story, I’ll like it very much! Amethyst Heat will only take you a few minutes to read, but it will take you a lot longer to forget or stop imagining more about it. Within those few minutes, I was captivated and drawn into Meg’s and Kade’s story and wanted to read more! I love the cover art for Amethyst Heat !! Kade… Mmmm… sexy, green-eyed kilt wearer! *fans self* Amethyst Heat is a story about an amethyst ring, sexy men in kilts (should have led with that, right? LOL), time travel, and a fated love. Can we have more please, Laurie???
