I loved this book. The story was great. i read it while taking a children's literature course at UCSD. I love how the 2 stories intertwine. It's a book that I have re-read, so that says a lot about how much I liked it.

This falls into the dystopic nightmare category of books...But Ishiguro's quiet, controlled narrative voice sustains you throughout its scenes of devastation. I couldn't put it down and immediately started re-reading it after I turned its last page...And then picked up _The Remains of the Day_ to continue the Ishiguro-lovefest. Read this book!!! (I think Ji-Hyae has my copy in Ann Arbor, so y'all in AA can borrow it from her...)

Any book which begins "On the day that his grannie was killed by the English, Sir William Scott the Younger of Buccleuch was at Melrose Abbey, marrying his aunt" is pretty much guaranteed to be a success, and The Disorderly Knights does not disappoint. The beginning is a little slow, but it soon picks up pace, moving from Malta to north Africa to France to Scotland, all while Dunnett manages to juggle characters and plotlines with a dexterity that astounds. It all should descend to farce and melodrama, especially given some of Lymond's propensities and characteristics, but the astounding thing is that it doesn't. The twist at the end is telegraphed perhaps a little soon, even if only subtly--Lymond is painted with so black a brush that you know it can't be true. It made for a great showdown, especially if you've been to St Giles and can imagine the environs. I was sad that I had to say goodbye to some of my favourite characters, though. Oh, Scotts.

Another one of those books I was assigned to read for its racy poco quality. And it had that definitely. Another nice aspect was the language: very clear, poetic prose throughout, thus giving the book a nice narrative drive. However, in the end I wasn't that much impressed. Sorry Jamaica, but I don't suppose I'll ever read another book of yours again. Liked this one though.
Entertaining holiday read.
