While I'm reading these books I have a number of running threads batting around in my head and I always plan to really write out a thorough examination of them. Then I finish and in either my excitement to move forward or the bittersweetness of it being over, I don't want to take the time. So here are my brief notes on this, my favorite of all seven, and the capstone in the work of literature I love best. Harry Potter is an intrinsically Christian series, not only because it time and time again celebrates the nobility of laying down your life for those you love, but more because throughout the series Harry's chief flaw is that he relies on his own understanding, rather than what he knows is right. From the first book, when he's tempted to give up the work of defending the Philosopher's Stone in favor of staying with the Mirror and seeing his dead loved ones, to the last where he's got to make the choice between chasing the Hallows or finding and destroying Horcruxes, Harry consistently is faced with what is right (what he knows he should be doing) and what is easy (what seems right because it's in line with his heart's desire). This is what gives his bildungsroman the verity and weight it has—especially since the things he wants to chase are almost always good things in and of themselves. His motives aren't wrong, he just knows that there is a bigger plan and so must set aside his immediate wants. That's tricky stuff to explore well for any novel, much less a YA fantasy series, and that it's done with so light a touch, in the midst of clockwork plots of the highest order, is a testament to Rowling's genius. Her writing in Deathly Hallows is not her most polished, but page for page it has the highest number of striking scenes and powerful character and plot moments. We know these characters so well, and to see them come this far is exhilarating and ultimately profoundly moving. Back in 2007 when I started this book, I assumed Rowling would spend basically the entire thing explaining and wrapping up. Instead, she spends about 85% piling on more mystery, more backstory, complications, numerous startling narrow escapes, and realizations of character, to then tie everything up so perfectly by the end it almost makes your head spin to read it. I don't have a lot more to say about it, except that this is my fifth read of the series, and every time I worry that it'll diminish in rereading. It's always the opposite. It gets richer, more meaningful, more impressive, and more dear to me every time. I think there can be a temptation when something is as universally beloved as Harry Potter is (few things have reached that peak, I know) to write it off as populist and easy. Popular, yes. Pedestrian, hardly. I feel as I'm sure many do, that the appreciation I have for these books is personal to the point of intimate, and while everyone in the world may love them, in the actual reading of them it's just the one reader, visiting this world, like through a Pensieve, vividly realized to the point of seeming real, only to find the end coming too soon.

Mike has a room for rent and Wes needs a room. Hero meet Hero. Mike recognizes Wes from college even though they are very far from that location now. Just a coincidence that they end up in the same town far away and one has a room to rent and one needs a room after getting his residency location. There is another family related coincidence as well. There is a short period where Wes believes Mike to be straight, but that misinformation gets straightened (pun intended) out fairly quickly. From the moment of their first kiss, they move into being a couple (although they don't realize it) and just keep moving forward into their lives. They question where they stand, they meet each other's family, they live together and work around each others schedule. They go out partying, make friends and commit to a monogamous relationship. No big disasters, no big misunderstandings, no arguing or fighting. Just seamless step after step into a lifelong commitment they never saw coming. The writing was good, but there seemed to be a lot of scenes that didn't move the story forward and a lot of talking in those scenes. I expected important gems of insight to come from these talks, but really, it was just family being family. This book bogged down at these points and suffered for it. The sex was very hot and it does occur early in the book. The glimmer of potential kink in some of the scenes would have made a world of difference in this book, adding much needed excitement if it had been explored more instead of used just playfully with no underlying meaning or tension.

Okay, so I read a Nora Roberts novel. I had to see what the hype was about, and also, I needed some research on a simple concept: What sells? I actually discovered the opposite of my hypothesis with Roberts. My assumption was that she would have an engaging, fun-filled story, but the writing quality would be poor. In actuality, she's a very talented writer (no Salman Rushdie by any means, of course), but her stories are quite basic and even dry. Apart from the rare erotic scene, they're not even all that steamy. So I give her three stars to cover lovely moments of literary skill, but the story is what really makes the novel, in my mind, and she doesn't have it. Not in this particular work, at least.

I cannot believe this is her first novel. It was incredible! For me, this was one of those books that I just couldn't put down. You know the type where you're holding it/reading it as you're cooking? Taking it in the bathroom for potty breaks? Exploring the merits of taking a bath vs. a shower because you could read in the bath (if you were very very careful as it's a Kindle version)? Contemplating reading it during red-lights on the drive to work? Yeah, this was one of those. The character development in this book is just fabulous. I felt like I knew every character and had visited with them personally. The pace is perfect and I never felt bored. The plot is so rich. The setting and time period were intriguing (having never been to Mississippi and loving this time period). I loved this book and eagerly await another from Ms. Stockett!

Great summer book, a page turner. The combination of fiction with historical events and the raw description of the drug war between the U.S. and the Mexican cartels works very well.
